Trump rips Biden for ‘spiraling tsunami’ at border

Amid a surge of migrant families and unaccompanied children, former President Trump on Friday issued a statement scolding President Biden for a “spiraling tsunami” at the border.

“Our border is now totally out of control thanks to the disastrous leadership of Joe Biden,” Trump said. “Our great Border Patrol and ICE agents have been disrespected, demeaned, and mocked by the Biden Administration. A mass incursion into the country by people who should not be here is happening on an hourly basis, getting worse by the minute.”

Trump noted the Biden administration order to release migrants in South Texas who had tested positive for COVID-19 and the shutdown of interior immigration enforcement.

“The spiraling tsunami at the border is overwhelming local communities, depleting budgets, crowding hospitals, and taking jobs from legal American workers,” he said.

Trump said that when he left office, his administration “had achieved the most secure border in our country’s history.”

“Under Biden, it will soon be worse, more dangerous, and more out of control than ever before. He has violated his oath of office to uphold our Constitution and enforce our laws,” he said.

At the White House on Friday, press secretary Jen Psaki dismissed Trump’s statement.

“We don’t take our advice or counsel from former President Trump on immigration policy, which was not only inhumane but ineffective over the last four years,” she said. “We’re going to tread our own path forward and that includes treating children with humanity and respect and ensuring they’re safe when they cross our borders.”

Biden has fufilled campaign promises to stop construction of the border wall, eliminate the Remain in Mexico policy and restore “catch-and-release.” In Congress, his Democratic allies are proposing legislation that would provide a pathway for citizenship for illegal immigrants who are already in the country.

Biden also has ended agreements with Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala that allowed migrants to make asylum claims from their home countries.

Trump’s agreement with the Northern Triangle countries was one of many made with the aim of ending the 2019 migrant crisis.

In his statement Friday, Trump said Biden abandoned the “incredible” Remain in Mexico policy “probably because it worked so well.”

“Likewise, our Safe Third Agreements in Central America were extraordinarily successful, so Biden foolishly ditched them too,” he said.

Trump charged in his CPAC speech last Sunday that Biden was fomenting a “self-inflicted humanitarian and national security disaster.”

The Case Against Reparations: Part 1

February 25, 2021 MadMadNews Reposted Filed Under: INVESTIGATIONS, Newsbusters

Last week, I testified before the House Committee on the Judiciary’s Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties regarding H.R. 40: Examining the Path to Reparative Justice in America. In other words, reparations. This is the first part of the statement I submitted:

“Reparations is the extraction of money from people who were never slave owners to be given to people who were never slaves.”

It is also interesting that we are having this hearing at a time when racism as a barrier to success has never been so insignificant. In 1991, Black Democrat and Harvard sociologist Orlando Patterson said: “The sociological truths are that America, while still flawed in its race relations and its stubborn refusal to institute a rational, universal welfare system, is now the least racist white-majority society in the world; has a better record of legal protection of minorities than any other society, white or Black; offers more opportunities to a greater number of Black persons than any other society, including all those of Africa.”

In 1997, Time/CNN did a broad survey of Black and white teens. Asked whether racism is a major problem in America, both said yes. But, when Black teens were asked whether racism was a big problem, small problem or no problem in their own daily lives, 89% said small or no problem. In fact, nearly twice as many Black teens, compared to white teens, agreed that “failure to take advantage of available opportunities” was a bigger problem than racism.

During the 2008 race for the presidency, the major contenders were Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton; and Republicans Mitt Romney, a Mormon, and Sen. John McCain, who would have been 72 by the time he entered office, if elected. A 2007 Gallup poll found fewer Americans would refuse to vote for a Black person (5%); than would refuse to vote for a woman (11%); than would refuse to vote for a Mormon (24%); than would refuse to vote for someone who would be 72 upon entering office (42%).

In 2007, the year before he was elected president, Obama spoke at a Black church on the anniversary of Bloody Sunday. He said: “The previous generation, the Moses generation (the generation of Martin Luther King Jr.), pointed the way. They took us 90% of the way there, but we still got that 10% in order to cross over to the other side.”

I thought that 10% remaining “to cross over to the other side” was a fair assessment. After all, a 2002 Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll found that 8% of Americans believed that Elvis Presley was still alive — or that at least there was “a chance.” So, as to Obama’s 10% remaining, I’m not sure how much more wiggle room we have left before running into the Elvis factor.

The reparations argument is based, in part, on the belief that but for slavery, America would not have become the prosperous nation it is today.

To the contrary, conservative scholar Michael Medved notes:

It’s not true that the U.S. became a wealthy nation through the abuse of slave labor: The most prosperous states in the country were those that first freed their slaves. …

At the time of the Constitution, Virginia constituted the most populous and wealthiest state in the Union, but by the time of the War Between the States the Old Dominion had fallen far behind a half-dozen northern states that had outlawed slavery two generations earlier.

About the difference in wealth between the North and the South, Frederick Douglass, after escaping from a plantation in Maryland to freedom in Massachusetts, wrote: “But the most astonishing as well as the most interesting thing to me was the condition of the colored people, a great many of whom, like myself, had escaped thither as a refuge from the hunters of men. I found many, who had not been seven years out of their chains, living in finer houses, and evidently enjoying more of the comforts of life, than the average of slaveholders in Maryland.”

To be continued next week.

Tom Holland Describes How He Messed Up His Star Wars Audition

February 23, 2021 MadMadNews Reposted Filed Under: ENTERTAINMENT, IGN

Before he was Spider-Man, Tom Holland was apparently multiple auditions deep into a Star Wars role he thinks eventually went to John Boyega – but messed it up and didn’t get the part.

This audition story comes by way of Backstage in a new interview with the Spider-Man and Uncharted actor. Before becoming synonymous with Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and before nabbing the role of famed treasure hunter, Nathan Drake, Holland was apparently “four or five” auditions deep for a role in what we now know as Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/08/alfred-molina-spotted-on-the-set-of-spider-man-3″]

“I remember my audition for Star Wars,” Holland told Backstage when asked about audition horror stories he had. “I was like four or five auditions in, and I think I was auditioning for John Boyega’s role [Finn]. I remember doing this scene with this lady, bless her, and she was just a drone. So I was doing all of this, like, ‘We gotta get back to the ship!’ and she was going, ‘Bleep, bloop bloop, bleep bloop.”

Holland said he couldn’t stop laughing because of how funny he found it. He also felt really bad because it was clear the person was trying really hard to be a convincing android or drone.

“I obviously didn’t get the part,” he continued. “That wasn’t my best moment.”

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=uncharted-movie-images&captions=true”]

It’s a great story and it’s not hard to imagine how that mess-up might have led us to the reality where Holland plays Peter Parker instead of Finn.

Speaking of multiple timelines, check out this story about Holland denying that former Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield appear in the upcoming MCU Spider-Man sequel and then read about how he called the next Spider-Man movie the “most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever made.” After that, check out the first image of Holland as Nathan Drake in the upcoming Uncharted film.
