The University of California, Los Angeles on Tuesday named as its next dean of public health the head of a Harvard University center that was hit with numerous anti-Semitism allegations in a university report last year.
Kari Nadeau, the chair of the environmental health department at Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health, will leave Harvard for UCLA just months after she became the interim director of the Harvard François-Xavier Bagnoud (FXB) Center for Health and Human Rights. The FXB center’s previous director, Mary Bassett, resigned in January, and Nadeau was tapped to replace her.
The FXB Center and its Palestine Program for Health and Human Rights were a focus of the report issued in April 2025 by Harvard’s task force on anti-Semitism. Over the weekend, a program sponsored by the FXB Center featured a speaker who demonized Israeli doctors as “pro-genocide.”
Though most of the incidents took place before Nadeau was named interim director, the weekend’s event makes clear that at least some of that programming has continued under her stewardship. The task force’s report described a hostile climate for Jewish students at the school of public health, which houses the FXB center and features a course on the “Settler Colonial Determinants of Health.”
“One student told us that the FXB programming created the impression that ‘Israel exists solely to oppress Palestinians, and nothing else,'” the anti-Semitism report reads. A speaker at a November 2024 webinar described in the report claimed that the “IDF’s charter is to target healthcare workers.” Students who raised concerns about the center’s programming were allegedly asked, “who is more marginalized, Jews or Palestinians,” and noted that there were “no programs on the ‘public health consequences of rockets being fired or suicide bombings.'”
Nadeau, a pediatrician by training, will assume the UCLA post in July. In a statement announcing her appointment, the university praised Nadeau for her “inclusive, student-centered approach to preparing the next generation of public health leaders.” UCLA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Nadeau’s appointment comes as the Trump administration is suing UCLA over a string of controversial incidents, including a guest lecture by an “activist-in-residence,” Lisa Gray-Garcia, who led chants of “Free, Free Palestine” in a mandatory class for first-year medical students. The university was hit with a separate lawsuit this week after it stonewalled a public records request about Gray-Garcia, who has referred to the Oct. 7 attacks as “justice” and described the University of California, San Francisco, as a “Zionist funded akkkademik institution.”
Nadeau’s short time as FXB director got off to an awkward start. She stepped in to replace Bassett, who lost her job at the center in the wake of Harvard’s anti-Semitism report, prompting a petition from students and faculty that accused Harvard of racism.
“This targeted dismissal follows a series of politically motivated terminations of leaders at Harvard’s scholarly centers that include programming on Palestine,” the petition read. “This decision … also reflects a deeper, troubling pattern of targeted erasure–especially of Black women whose scholarship confronts structural violence and insists on the dignity of marginalized peoples, including Palestinians.”

BLM Activist Ordered To Pay Back $224,000 In COVID Relief Funds, Donations

A Black Lives Matter activist in Boston was ordered on March 23 to pay back more than $224,000 in pandemic relief funds and donations to her nonprofit.

Monica Cannon-Grant, 44, pleaded guilty last fall to multiple fraud charges and filing false tax returns. She was sentenced to serve six months of home confinement, 100 hours of community service, and four years of probation.

Federal District Court Judge Angel Kelly in Boston set the monetary judgment equal to the amount of money Cannon-Grant admitted taking from nonprofit Violence in Boston, which Cannon-Grant founded and where she formerly served as CEO.

In March 2023, a grand jury handed down a 27-count indictment against Cannon-Grant and her husband Clark Grant, charging them with fraud in connection to Violence in Boston, which they founded in 2017. Grant died in a motorcycle crash three weeks after the indictment was served while driving about 30 minutes east of Boston.

Federal prosecutors said Cannon-Grant paid herself about $25,100 in 2020 and more than $170,000 in 2021 from the nonprofit’s account, according to the charging documents.

About $181,037 of the total funds in question were donated to the organization and diverted for her personal use, $33,426 was obtained from pandemic unemployment assistance benefits, and $12,600 were from rental assistance funds, according to the judge.

In September, Cannon-Grant admitted to diverting thousands of dollars in donor money earmarked for the nonprofit for her own personal use, according to federal prosecutors.

In one instance, prosecutors say after receiving about $54,000 in pandemic relief funds from the city of Boston, Cannon-Grant withdrew about $30,000 in cash from the nonprofit’s account and made deposits of $5,200 and $1,000 into her personal checking account. She also made payments on her personal auto loan and car insurance policy.

Cannon-Grant also pleaded guilty to filing false tax returns for two years, among other tax charges.

“Monica Cannon-Grant repeatedly scammed multiple public financial programs and stole money donated by members of the public who believed their donations would aid in reducing violence and promote social awareness,” U.S. Attorney Leah Foley said in September in a statement. “She betrayed the trust of everyone who donated and the public who supported her fraudulent charity.”

Cannon-Grant’s attorneys asked the judge for a lighter sentence of two years of probation, no fine, and a special fee of $1,650. They described their client as a “loving mother, wife, and daughter who had dedicated her life to advancing social justice and serving communities in need.”

“She has inspired a generation of social activists to speak out against injustice and to support those around them who need a voice and access to daily essentials like food and housing,” her attorneys wrote in a sentencing memo to the judge.

“Ms. Cannon-Grant made fundamental errors in judgment. She is deeply sorry and has now taken full responsibility for her actions.”

Her attorneys also described Cannon-Grant’s home life as traumatic and violent. She grew up in deep poverty and subsidized housing, and lived on welfare and food stamps with a violent and alcoholic father, according to court documents.

Her attorneys didn’t immediately return a request for comment.

But it wasn’t just the legislation that raised eyebrows, it was Curtis’s full-blown embrace of liberal amnesty talking points that left CNBC host Joe Kernen wondering which side of the aisle the Utah Republican actually sits on.
During the segment on CNBC’s Squawk Box, Kernen pressed the duo on the wide-open border and whether there should be a path to citizenship for those here illegally.
Rather than standing up for the rule of law and the millions of Americans demanding deportations, Curtis pivoted to a weak, “compassionate” defense that sounded like it was scripted by the DNC.
Curtis framed illegal entry not as a categorical violation requiring removal, but as a policy gap, suggesting that lawmakers have failed to define outcomes for those already in the country unlawfully.

Joe Kernen:Do we need, then, to—anyone who’s here illegally that hasn’t committed a crime—Senator Curtis, should there be a path to citizenship? Is that what compassion means to you, or should these people not be allowed to stay?
Sen. Curtis:Well, then let me ask you a question. Is there any law—any rule broken in our country—where we don’t have a consequence defined? So why don’t we have a consequence defined when it comes to coming into this country without documentation? We continue to allow these people to be here, but we haven’t defined what their consequence is.
Joe Kernen:So that’s an inaction from policymakers?
Sen. Curtis:Absolutely.
Joe Kernen:All right. So what would you say we need to do, then? What’s your answer to that? I guess it’s like every other—
Sen. Curtis:So first of all, you have to define amnesty.
Joe Kernen:“Is that like what ‘is,’ is?”
Sen. Curtis:But any other crime that’s committed here in our country, we define what—we define what the punishment is. And we’ve failed to do that in this case.
Joe Kernen:Senator Schiff? I thought I’d be arguing with you, not Senator Curtis.

According to it, creators can:Sell durable and consumable goods from Fortnite islandsIncentives for players when they bring new or previously inactive playersCreators get an ad-revenue share of 100% for creations for a yearThe Unreal Engine and the Disney factorDespite the layoffs, Epic remains a strategic player in the tech sector due to its Unreal Engine. BCG predicts that cloud gaming revenues will grow from $1.4 billion in 2025 to around $18.3 billion in 2030. And with Epic’s transition from Unreal Engine 5 to Unreal Engine 6, Epic stands to benefit from its proprietary 3D engine, which is a gold standard for developers, Hollywood studios, and industrial designers alike.While the platform is free to use and open source, Epic does take a 5% royalty on all lifetime gross revenue above $1 million. Thus, it stands to benefit more based on BCG’s projection of rising cloud gaming revenue, as developers continue to make gaming more phone-centric and accessible.Furthermore, Epic’s $1.5 billion partnership with The Walt Disney Company, which effectively gives it 9% stake in the game developer, is integral to its next era of growth. This partnership opens up avenues for a Disney universe in Unreal Engine, unlocking intellectual property ecosystems, and has helped affirm Epic’s reputation.What happens to the employees?CEO Sweeney has been upfront in clarifying that the layoffs are not related to AI and that the company takes pride in hiring the best developers in the world.The company is ensuring that its employees leave happy despite the setback with these terms for the severance package:Four months of base payMore salary based on the tenure of service. Extended Epic-paid health coverage, 6 months in the US.Accelerated stock options vesting through Jan 2027 and extend equity exercise options for up to two years.
