President Donald Trump condemned Elon Muskβs newly-formed third party on Sunday while speaking to reporters in New Jersey.
Musk posted on X Saturday that he had just launched the βAmerica Partyβ to restore βfreedomβ to Americans. When a reporter asked Trump for his reaction, the president immediately said it was a βridiculousβ move by Musk.
WATCH:
βI think itβs ridiculous to start a third party. We have a tremendous success with the Republican party. The Democrats have lost their way, but itβs always been a two-party system,β Trump said. βAnd I think starting a third party just adds to confusion. It really seems to have been developed for two parties. Third parties have never worked. So he can have fun with it but I think itβs ridiculous.β
Trump alsoΒ railed against Musk and his creation of the new party in a Sunday Truth Social post following his comments to reporters.
βI am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely βoff the rails,β essentially becoming a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks. He even wants to start a Third Political Party, despite the fact that they have never succeeded in the United States β The System seems not designed for them,β the president wrote. βThe one thing Third Parties are good for is the creation of Complete and Total DISRUPTION & CHAOS, and we have enough of that with the Radical Left Democrats, who have lost their confidence and their minds!β
Musk started to repeatedly raise the notion of forming the βAmerica Partyβ to appeal to disaffected fiscal conservatives and libertarians due to his frustration with Republican lawmakers backing Trumpβs βbig, beautifulβ bill β which the president signedΒ into law on Friday.
However, political experts argue that it would be better for Musk to spend his billions to buy influence within the Republican Partyβs existing structure instead of challenging Americaβs established two-party duopoly.
βThird parties are like honeybees β they sting and then they die,β Georgetown political historian Michael KazinΒ toldΒ the Daily Caller News Foundation.
Musk posted an X poll on Friday asking if Americans βwant independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) systemβ by forming βthe America Party.β
Nearly two-thirds of X users voted in favor of the new party, while slightly over one third voted against it, prompting him to announce the creation of the βAmerica Partyβ on Saturday.
CNN senior political commentator Scott Jennings also warned Musk on Sunday that the βAmerica Partyβ could split right-leaning Americans and help Democrats win elections.
βMy humble advice to Elon, who I admire very much, actually, is that you may be dividing the forces of people who want to save Western civilization to the benefit of the people who donβt,β Jennings said. βAnd so, to the extent that this effort would divide conservatives and Republicans against each other, that wouldnβt be helpful, because it would leave the country to people who want unfettered immigration, who donβt share your fiscal views, and so on and so forth.β
