We had the courage to break with convention and focus on a completely innovative idea, one that could offer something unique, transform a luxury hotel in a contemporary art gallery. This approach allowed us to combine hospitality with art, creating an unprecedented experience for our guests.

The hotel features uniquely designed rooms and suites reflecting Milan’s rich artistic heritage. It is a true celebration of history, culture, art, architecture, and spirit through its distinct design, highlighting artistry from the past and present to create a singular escape.

As the Operations Manager, what is the first thing you notice when you enter a hotel and which details do you pay particular attention to?

The first thing every person notices upon entering is the overall ambiance and the first impression it creates, Galleria Vik Milano entrance is already a reflection of what guests will find all over their stay. Guest’s are welcomed by a replica of The Thinker by Rodin and will be immersed into a large-scale artistic installation, painting 220 square meters with striking depictions of titans, atlases, and mythical figures, adorned with unique punched gold leaves.

The guest experience begins the moment they step inside, so I also focus on the warmth and professionalism of the staff. The way they greet guests and their level of attentiveness are key indicators of the quality of service we provide.

How do you maintain consistent service standards at the property?

To maintain consistent service standards at the property, we rely on a combination of strategies. First, we hold regular staff meetings to ensure that everyone is aligned on expectations, updates, and any changes in our service protocols. This helps us maintain a high level of communication and ensures that the team is always aware of our standards.

Additionally, we actively seek feedback from our guests, whether through direct interactions or review platforms. This feedback is invaluable in identifying areas where we can improve and ensuring we’re meeting the needs of our guests consistently.

Social media addiction doesn’t happen by accident; the companies behind these platforms design them for profit. Their goal is to keep users engaged for as long as possible. You can even calculate how much money you spend during endless scrolling on social media, losing both productive time and part of your budget without even realizing it. In this post, we will analyze how social media algorithms control user attention and fuel addiction.

Personalised Content

Have you ever wondered why it often feels like the posts you see on social media are customized just for you? That’s because they really are! Machine learning algorithms built into these platforms are designed to analyze every user interaction.

They track every post you like, share, and comment on, and they can tell how long you spend on each post. Based on this data, the algorithm curates a feed with content that aligns perfectly with your interests. 

If you frequently interact with content related to a specific topic, the algorithm will continue to recommend more content that fits your browsing profile. At the same time, if you follow certain accounts, the platform will suggest similar accounts, keeping your content streamlined.

How Personalisation Causes Addiction

This level of customisation is one of the major reasons social media feels so enjoyable for many. By showing users just what they want to see over and over again, these apps keep them in a loop. Note that personalization does not mean the platform is fixed on one type of content forever.

You will also see other content types and you get to find new content niches as well. This allows the algorithm to adjust to your preferences even if your interests change in the future, keeping you perpetually hooked.

Endless Scrolling

Three scientists, Brian Wansink, James E Painter, and Jill North, once carried out an experiment that tricked people into eating more soup by offering them a self-refilling bowl. The experiment found that the subjects ate 73 percent more soup than they would have eaten without even knowing it.

In 2006, Aza Raskin designed a simple app feature based on this principle. This resulted in one of the simplest but impactful features that allows people to endlessly consume social media content with the simple flick of their finger for as long as they want. Before this, web pages were paginated, and users had to reload new pages to get more content.

How Endless Scrolling Causes Addiction

Social media apps claim that endless scrolling just makes it easier for users to see what they want to watch. But it also has the potential to cause uncontrolled usage. Endless scrolling makes it difficult for your brain to catch up with your impulses.

You’re continuously fed more and more engaging content, so you keep scrolling for much longer than you intend to. In Raskin’s own words, “It’s as if social media companies are taking behavioral cocaine and just sprinkling it all over your interface.” This is what keeps people coming back for more.

Short Form Content

Research shows that the average human attention span shrank by up to 25 percent between 2000 and 2015. Currently, it stands at about 8 seconds, which is shorter than the attention of a goldfish.

Recognizing this, social media platforms now prioritize short-form content over long-form content. Apps like Instagram and TikTok push short-form content to users to encourage them to keep scrolling.

Effects of Short-Form Content on Addiction

Constantly consuming bite-sized information is like giving your brain little doses of dopamine continuously. This combination creates a feedback loop for the brain that makes it more likely to get hooked to social media content. In fact, most people now spend more than two hours daily scrolling through social media. Interestingly, it won’t even feel like a chore because it requires so little effort to consume.

Notifications

Have you ever picked up your phone to check your notifications even though you heard no audible alert? Most people do this unconsciously, and it’s one of the classic signs of addiction. Virtually all social media platforms have notifications designed to grab a user’s attention and encourage them to check their account. This is one of the leading causes of prolonged use of social media.

In the past, notifications were exclusively for messages. Now, social media apps send notifications for everything, including:

  • Likes
  • Comments
  • Shares
  • Friend requests (or suggestions)
  • Posts
  • And so on

Hearing the beep or vibration of your device triggers a dopamine release. This leads to instant pleasure and reinforces your behavior. Apps exploit this further by sending notifications intermittently at unpredictable intervals. This tricks the brain into randomly expecting notifications, which is why you sometimes catch yourself checking for more notifications even when there aren’t any.

Fear of Missing Out (FOMO)

Algorithms are programmed to show users what’s trending. Virtually all platforms have a page or section of their site dedicated to trending content. These pages show the most recent and the most engaged social media posts.

This creates a sense of urgency, making it feel like you’re missing out if you’re not online. As a result, users feel pressured to stay connected and constantly engage with the most popular content.

My breaking point came on a Monday morning at 6 a.m.

It had been the same routine for months: up at 5 a.m., brush my teeth, put on my workout clothes, move my body, weigh myself.

On this morning, the scale’s numbers glared back, stubborn as ever. My reflection in the mirror seemed foreign—tired eyes, face still sweaty, a body that felt like a lead weight. Outside, cars hummed past, oblivious. I’d woken early to squeeze in a workout, but all I could do was sit there, shaking with anger—at my body, at the relentless grind, at losing myself… again.

That moment wasn’t just about the weight. It was the culmination of years of silent sacrifices: waking up much too early to move my body—because when else would I find the time? Cooking dinners through exhaustion, handing out store-bought fig bars while envying the “made-from-scratch” moms on social media, and collapsing into bed each night wondering, “Is this how it is now?”

The Myth of the “Selfless” Woman

For a long time, I’d absorbed a dangerous lie: that love and family meant erasing myself. My husband worked opposite shifts, leaving me racing against the clock each evening. We’d pass like ships in the night. Him heading to work as I scrubbed dishes. He envied my evenings at home, imagining cozy nights with the kids. I craved the solitude of his quiet days while the kids were in school, wishing for just one day alone in our empty house.

Society whispered that a “good” mother was a martyr. But my breaking point taught me a harder truth: selflessness isn’t sustainable.

When I snapped at my kids one night, abandoning story time and leaving them with a meditation instead, I realized my burnout wasn’t just hurting me—it was robbing my family of the calm, patient mom they deserved. The person I used to be was buried under layers of guilt and exhaustion. I wanted her back.

The First Rebellious Act

The first time I locked my bedroom door to exercise, my kids whined outside. “Mommy, why can’t we come in?” Guilt tugged at me as I turned on a workout video, letting their iPads babysit for thirty minutes. My husband supported me but would ask, “Why isn’t the scale moving faster?” I didn’t have answers—but for the first time, I’d chosen myself.

This wasn’t selfishness. It was survival.

The Three Lessons That Changed Everything

1. Being quiet is a radical act.

I began stealing slivers of silence: ten minutes of morning meditation, walks without podcasts, even turning off the car radio. In those moments, I rediscovered my own voice beneath the noise of expectations. Once, during a chaotic breakfast scramble, my six-year-old dropped a heaping spoonful of oats, spraying the counter and cabinets with the gooey mess.

Instead of snapping in frustration, I breathed deeply—a skill honed in those stolen quiet moments. I’d found my patience again. “Let’s clean it together,” I said, my calm surprising us both.

Try this: Start with five minutes of intentional quiet daily. No screens, no lists, no voices telling you how it should be done—just you and your breath. This time isn’t for silencing thoughts but sitting with them.

2. Progress isn’t linear (and that’s okay).

When my business flopped on social media, I felt exposed. Like I’d been forced to perform, not thrive.

Letting go of others’ strategies, I rebuilt quietly: phone calls instead of reels, emails instead of hashtags, intimate workshops instead of lives. It was slower, but mine. One night, my son asked why I hadn’t “gone viral yet.” I smiled. “Because I’d rather talk to you, not my camera.” 

Truth: Every “failure” taught me to trust my rhythm, not the world’s noise. Do what feels supported, not forced.

3. Boundaries are love, not rejection.

My husband started cooking on his nights home, shooing me off to go to meditate or move my body—whatever I needed in the moment. The kids built “cozy corners” with pillows, learning to honor their own need for space. Now, when my son says, “I need alone time,” I don’t panic or prod—he’s mirroring what I finally allowed myself.
