It’s not just Dems that Republicans are fighting, witches also are demanding a ‘blue wave’

It’s not just Democrats and Democrat socialists and borderline Marxists and communists that Republicans were facing in the 2026 midterms Tuesday.
There were the witches, too.
According to a report from Intercessors for America, a Christian prayer organization that offers a strategy to counter the demonic, “witches and warlocks” already were “very busy” because of the just-concluded Halloween season.
Their focus, once again, has been Trump and his administration, the report said.
“Halloween is the highest day on the Satanic calendar, and it’s a time when demonic portals are active. Witches and pagans are lighting their candles, casting their spells, and uniting with the dark realm in order to, in their words, ‘Stop the corrupt, fascist government of Donald Trump and all of his enablers by taking back our government!’”
IFA confirmed the same faction has opposed Trump in the past, and in 2025, “there was a concerted effort by witches around the country to ‘bind,’ or ‘take back power’ from President Trump and conservative leaders.”
A ringleader is occult speaker Michael M. Hughes, whose work has been featured in the New York Times, The Atlantic, Boston Globe, CNN, The L.A. Times, Rolling Stone, Comedy Central, Wire, Elle, Vox, and Cosmopolitan, the report said.
He boasts he has created the “Spell to Bind Donald Trump and All Those Who Abet Him.”
This year his specifics include “detailed spells and rituals.”
He claims his ritual is “powerful” and encourages supporters to share it with friends.
He states, “We need the Blue Wave. We’re standing on the edge of an abyss, America. It’s time to put all of our collective spiritual energy into the fight.”
He wants “certain words” to be spoken “with absolute contempt and fury,” and tells fans to visualize the destruction they demand.
He adds, “If you’re feeling a bit hexy and want to get personal, feel free to add a litany of the names of despicable GOP members” as targets.
IFA explained, “This is an evil conspiracy designed to dismantle our nation’s foundations, from our government to the Constitution. Make no mistake, these are the very same goals that the witches and pagans aspire to. With ‘Do as thou wilt’ as their mantra, nothing is off the table.”
And it said some ballot issues, regarding abortion, LGBT beliefs, Critical Race Theory, gender confusion, antisemitism, transhumanism, Black Lives Matter, socialism, all are “tied to paganism in some way. ”
The solution IFA, said, isn’t complicated. “Isaiah 5:20 warns, ‘Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and shrewd in their own sight!’”
“Let’s take our cue from godly men such as Rees Howells, a missionary whose life of intercession literally changed world events. U-boats, tanks, bombs, and Hitler himself were no match for the powerful prayers that shook heaven during World War 2,” IFA reported.
“The forces of darkness stand no chance against the King of Kings! Jesus Christ has ALL AUTHORITY over any spell or any demons that could be summoned. As intercessors, we partner with Him.”
It suggests a prayer: “Lord Jesus, we ask for Your mighty hand to halt the forces of darkness that seek to influence the 2026 midterm elections and any evil plan in the works. We plead Your precious blood over our poll stations and workers, as well as over the people of our nation. We also plead Your blood over any spells, enchantments, or curses that are being cast by the Blue Wave 3.0 Movement. We declare those spells null and void! We know that many who are engaged in pagan practices, such as witchcraft, do not know who You are, Lord. We pray that instead of a Blue Wave across America, we would have a wave of revival where dark hearts are enlightened by the truth of Your Word and by Your sacrifice on the cross. Give Your angels charge over our citizens, over our elections, and over the beloved land You have given us.”

Practitioners of witchcraft and the occult are at it again, casting spells to “bind” President Trump and influence the midterm elections in order to induce a Democratic “Blue Wave” takeover of Congress. https://t.co/koafkunA7i

Popeyes is cutting one menu staple while reviving a side it dropped a decade ago

November 3, 2026 MMN Editor Filed Under: SUCCESS, The Street

When Popeyes first opened in 1972 in a suburb of New Orleans, what would grow into one of the world’s largest fried-chicken chains had a much broader menu offering.

Along with its signature fried chicken, it served dishes as diverse as lamb burgers, clam dinners, chicken livers, chicken tacos, and corn dogs, as well as long-forgotten sides such as rice dressing and bar-b-que beans.

Another original side dish that appeared on the older Popeyes menu was Cajun Onion Rings. The beer-battered slices of onion coated in Popeyes’ signature blend of Cajun spices became a menu staple particularly popular during the 1990s.

The kick of Cajun heat was what made the Popeyes version stand out from onion rings served at other chains.

Popeyes brings back Cajun Onion Rings for $3.99

To make room for new items and menu experimentation, the onion rings were eventually taken off the menu in most Popeyes restaurants in the 2010s (a few locations kept them until the start of the 2020s).

This week, Cajun Onion Rings were once again brought back at a price of $3.99, with a side of buttermilk ranch dressing.

“Onion rings are back at Popeyes,” the fast-food chain shared in an Instagram reel announcing the return. “After a decade of anticipation and cravings, everyone’s favorite crispy, golden side has returned.”

The onion rings are also available as part of a combo with six pieces of Popeyes’ signature Bone-In Chicken for $10.

The item is part of a temporary promotion that will eventually exit the menu, although the chain has not confirmed when that will be, and whether good uptake will motivate it to return the onion rings permanently.

The Cajun Onion Rings have been on Popeyes menus since the start of November.Popeyes

As Popeyes brings back onion rings, customers will see fewer wings

The return of the onion rings coincides with the chain’s plans to scale back its wide array of wing options. Popeyes has relied on these over the last three years, after expanding its permanent lineup to five sauces.

The exact details of what will be kept and what will be cut are currently unknown. Restaurant Brands International CEO Josh Kobza did, however, tell investors in an earnings call that reducing the chain’s wings offerings would help streamline operations and allow it to focus on core items, including the regular fried chicken and more popular chicken tenders.

“Wings add to operational complexity, and simplifying the platform allows us to put greater emphasis behind the core items,” Kobza said at the end of October.

In the last Oct. 29 earnings report, the parent company reported that Popeyes’ same-store sales declined by 2.2% from the previous year. According to Kobza, the sales decline was at least partially driven by Limited-Time Offers (LTOs) that did not achieve the results that the chain initially hoped for.

On Oct. 22, a Florida judge also approved a plan that will allow large Popeyes franchisee Sailormen Inc. to exit the Chapter 11 bankruptcy for which it filed in January 2026.

AMD Soars After Blowout $17 Billion Guide… As Free Cash Flow Quietly Shrinks To 4% Of Revenue

AMD Soars After Blowout $17 Billion Guide… As Free Cash Flow Quietly Shrinks To 4% Of Revenue

Three months ago, AMD beat on every line and the stock crashed anyway. Tonight, the market got the number it wanted. After a brutal month in which AMD shares lost more than a quarter of their value, pummeled first by Intel’s PC warning and then by the broader AI capex hangover, Lisa Su delivered the one thing that matters in this tape: a guide that clears the whisper, not just the consensus.*AMD SEES 4Q REVENUE ABOUT $17B PLUS OR MINUS 3%— zerohedge (@zerohedge) November 3, 2026That is $700 million above the $16.3 billion sellside consensus, and right on top of the $17 billion Jefferies’ Blayne Curtis had been pounding the table on in the days before the print. The stock, which closed up 3.7% at $483.90 into the event, promptly jumped another 10% to roughly $530 after hours, a move almost exactly in line with what the options market was implying. And yet, as so often happens with AI darlings in late 2026, the more interesting numbers are buried further down the release. Like the fact that a record $13.4 billion quarter produced just $554 million in free cash flow, a 4% margin, down from 17% a year ago. Or that AMD took a $1.1 billion hit on the warrants it hands out to its own customers.Beat, Raise… And Then SomeFirst, the headline numbers, all of which came in ahead of expectations (consensus per Bloomberg/FirstSquawk):Revenue: $13.38 billion vs $13.08 billion expected, up 45% Y/Y and above the high end of the $12.7-$13.3 billion guided rangeAdjusted EPS: $2.09 vs $1.97 expected, up 74% Y/YAdjusted operating income: $3.92 billion vs $3.68 billion expected; operating margin 29% vs 28% expectedAdjusted gross margin: 56%, in line with guidanceThen the segments, where the AI story did all the heavy lifting:Data Center: a record $8.55 billion, up 97% Y/Y and 27% Q/Q, comfortably above the roughly $8.3 billion the Street was looking for (Polymarket traders, for what it’s worth, had 79% odds on a print north of $8 billion). Segment operating income jumped 168% to $2.88 billion, a 34% margin vs 25% a year ago.Client & Gaming: $3.72 billion, down 8% Y/Y. Client rose 7% to $2.95 billion, but gaming revenue cratered 40% to $773 million.Embedded: $1.11 billion, up 29% Y/Y, helped by aerospace & defense, auto and industrial.Put differently, data center is now 64% of AMD’s revenue, up from 47% a year ago, while the legacy PC and gaming businesses are shrinking in absolute terms. Which, considering what Intel just told the market about PC demand, is probably a feature, not a bug.Lisa Su was predictably triumphant:”Demand for our Instinct and EPYC products continued to strengthen, and we expect growth to accelerate further in the fourth quarter as we scale Helios and ‘Venice’ production. With our leadership product portfolio and deep customer and supply chain relationships, we are confident in our ability to sustain very strong revenue growth and expanding profitability over the coming years.”Helios Hits The Gas: The Napkin Math On Q4The $17 billion guide implies 27% sequential growth in a single quarter, and roughly 65% Y/Y growth from last December’s ~$10.3 billion. For a company AMD’s size, that is extraordinary.Where does it come from? AMD doesn’t guide by segment, but the math is not hard. Assume Client & Gaming stays flat-to-down at around $3.6 billion (holiday season or not, Intel’s warning and “unprecedented” memory pricing per Apple’s Ternus are not exactly tailwinds) and Embedded grows modestly to ~$1.15 billion. That leaves roughly $12.2 billion for data center, a sequential jump of about 43% (approximate, our math, not AMD’s).That would be the first full quarter of the Helios rack-scale ramp built on the MI450, which AMD started shipping in September. On that front, the slide deck name-checks Anthropic, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure as already running models and workloads on the first Helios racks, which is about as complete a list of the AI money-spenders as one can assemble. It also puts Su’s target of more than doubling data center revenue in 2027 in context. Through nine months, data center revenue is $21.0 billion; add our ~$12 billion Q4 estimate and 2026 lands around $33 billion, which means “more than double” implies something like $66-70 billion next year. Susquehanna’s Christopher Rolland is already at $74 billion for 2027 ($33 billion of server CPUs and $41 billion of GPUs).The one blemish in the guide: adjusted gross margin of about 55%, below the 55.5% consensus and down from 56% in Q3.*AMD SEES 4Q ADJ GROSS MARGIN ABOUT 55%, EST. 55.5%— zerohedge (@zerohedge) November 3, 2026That is probably the cost of selling full racks (with plenty of third-party content inside) rather than just chips: more revenue, less margin per dollar. Expect Su to be asked about it on the call; expect the answer to be some version of “mix.”The Part Nobody Will Mention On The Call: Where’s The Cash?Regular readers will recall that last time around, in “AMD Crashes Despite Big Beat, CapEx Almost Triple Expectations” (Aug 4), the stock puked after hours because Q2 capex came in at $808 million, almost triple the $298 million expected, and free cash flow missed by 20%.This time capex actually eased to $648 million. Cash flow got worse anyway: operating cash flow halved to $1.2 billion from $2.37 billion in Q2, and free cash flow collapsed to $554 million from $1.56 billion. The FCF margin? 4%, down from 14% last quarter, 17% a year ago and 25% in Q1.The culprit is working capital, and it’s all on the balance sheet:Inventories jumped 35% in one quarter, to $11.46 billion from $8.47 billionAccounts receivable rose 26%, to $9.21 billion from $7.28 billionTotal debt more than doubled to $7.08 billion, thanks to the $4.75 billion bond deal AMD sold in AugustIn other words, AMD built about $5 billion of inventory and receivables in a quarter in which it generated $1.2 billion of operating cash. The bulls will say that’s what a ramp looks like: you build racks before you ship them, and hyperscalers pay on their own schedule. They may well be right, and the Q4 guide suggests the inventory is headed somewhere. But it’s worth remembering who the customers are: per Goldman, the hyperscalers just posted a combined negative free cash flow of $31 billion in Q3, down from roughly $60 billion a quarter as recently as Q3 2025.When your customers are burning cash and your receivables are growing faster than your revenue (26% vs 16% Q/Q), the question of who funds the gap becomes rather important. Something we discussed at length last week in “Debt Window Slams Shut: Meta Taps Shareholders For Up To $95 Billion, With Its Own Chip Suppliers Buying In”.A $1.1 Billion Warrant “Footnote”Which brings us to the other line tucked into the GAAP-to-non-GAAP reconciliation: a $1.097 billion charge for the “change in fair value of warrant liability relating to the quarterly remeasurement of warrants issued to certain customers.” That’s $0.66 per share, or the entire gap between GAAP EPS of $1.46 and the adjusted $2.09 everyone is cheering. The best-known of those customers, of course, is OpenAI, which back in October 2025 got a warrant for up to 160 million AMD shares as part of the chip deal that sent the stock up 24% in a day. We had a few thoughts at the time:*OPENAI SIGNS AMD CHIPS DEAL WORTH TENS OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARSit’s called a daily circle jerk because it’s daily— zerohedge (@zerohedge) October 6, 2025A year later, the circle has only gotten tighter. In October alone, data center developer Fermi jumped 20% after striking a credit support pact with AMD, and AMD joined Nvidia and Broadcom in indicating interest in buying up to $5 billion of Meta’s stock offering:META taking circular financing to an art form: Nvidia, AMD and Broadcom, Meta’s 3 biggest chip suppliers, “indicated an interest” in buying up to $5 billion of the common stock at the offering price.— zerohedge (@zerohedge) October 26, 2026So, to recap: AMD gives customers equity (warrants), gives developers credit support, buys its customers’ stock, and then books the resulting sales. The irony is that the warrant charge grows as AMD’s stock rises, so the better the AI trade does, the bigger the GAAP hit. Diversification at its finest. (AMD says customer warrants are not expected to affect its Q4 share count, for what it’s worth.)None of this is new to regular readers: we have been warning since last October, in “AI Is Now A Debt Bubble Too, Quietly Surpassing All Banks To Become The Largest Sector In The Market”, that the AI buildout increasingly runs on borrowed (and recycled) money. AMD’s August bond deal and today’s balance sheet are just the latest data points.Goldman: In This Tape, Beats Don’t Get PaidOf course, none of that matters tonight, because the guide was big enough to clear what Goldman’s desk had flagged as a very high bar. Earlier today, Goldman TMT specialist Peter Callahan wrote in his “quick hits” note (available to pro subs) that AMD was the name everyone wanted to talk about:”all eyes on earnings tonight (esp AMD + ANET)… bogeys (getting tons on AMD and DDOG)… most asked on: AMD 4Q guide expects, ANET CY27 framing and BKNG 4Q guidance”Callahan also flagged the problem that has dogged every AI infra name this earnings season: visibility beyond 2027.”quite clear at this point that the market is applying low(er) multiples to 2028 estimates in Semis / AI infra given the lack of perceived visibility – against that backdrop, it does feel like we are getting plenty of ‘2028’ visibility datapoints that ‘could’ help the AI trade whenever risk appetite improves”Nelson Armbrust’s morning “What Matters Today” note (also available to pro subs) framed the AMD print as one of “two important reads after Intel and the optical sell off,” adding that “in this tape, the reaction to the guidance may matter as much as the guidance itself.” And the reaction to TMT guidance has been ugly: while the median S&P stock beating EPS estimates outperformed the index by 152bps the next day, TMT beats underperformed by 76bps (Communication Services by a stunning 419bps) per Goldman’s portfolio strategy team.Positioning probably helps tonight’s move. Per Goldman Prime, hedge funds rotated out of TMT and into defensives in October, with Info Tech seeing the largest dollar net selling since June. Combine a 26% drawdown, light positioning and a guide $700 million above the Street, and you get a 7% pop. The harder question is whether it sticks: Goldman also sees AI capex growth “peaking,” with hyperscaler spend slowing from +96% this year (~$800 billion) to +44% in 2027 ($1.2 trillion), and EPS growth for AI infrastructure stocks peaking at 80% this quarter before slowing to about 40% by late 2027.Rally Now, Receivables LaterAs for the bigger picture, AMD’s quarter is a near-perfect microcosm of the AI trade in late 2026: revenue is real, growth is accelerating, and the cash is going somewhere else. The Q4 guide says the Helios ramp is happening; the balance sheet says AMD is fronting a growing share of the bill, in inventory, in receivables and in warrants.Bulls will argue all of that unwinds in Q4 as the racks ship and the customers pay. Maybe. But with the hyperscalers now free cash flow negative, Meta raising equity from its own suppliers and OpenAI still years from profitability, we suspect the working capital build is the new normal rather than a one-quarter blip. That’s fine for as long as the stock keeps going up. Then again, as AMD just showed, when the stock goes up, so does the warrant bill. We’ll be listening to the 5pm ET call for any color on receivables, Helios margins and the 2027 doubling target, and will update.

POLITICAL EARTHQUAKE: Trump DOJ Sends Criminal Target Letters to 20 Democrats, Including Deep State Lawyer Marc Elias Over Decoy Dan Sullivan Scheme

November 3, 2026 MMN Editor Filed Under: THE NEWS

The Trump Justice Department on Tuesday sent 20 criminal target letters to 20 Democrats, including notorious Deep State lawyer Marc Elias, over the Decoy Dan Sullivan scheme.
Marc Elias and other Democrats are the target of the Justice Department’s criminal investigation into whether Democrat operatives in the Peltola campaign were behind a plot to confuse Alaska voters by adding a spoiler candidate named Dan Sullivan to the ballot.
The Justice Department has launched an aggressive criminal investigation in Daniel J. Sullivan. Federal prosecutors have issued more than 40 subpoenas.
News of the criminal investigation comes after The New York Times confirmed that Mary Peltola’s campaign recruited the decoy Dan J. Sullivan to confuse Alaska voters.
Democrat operatives in Mary Peltola’s campaign worked to register a man named Daniel J. Sullivan as Dan S. Sullivan (the incumbent Senator’s name) as a GOP challenger.
The Times reported that the plan involved traveling to “far-flung Alaskan communities and the appearance of a mysterious Midwestern operative, who traversed the state using a fake name and made his pitch to would-be candidates over beers at brew pubs.”
“The plan worked. This spring, a retired teacher from a tiny fishing village along the Alaska Panhandle, reachable only by air and sea, announced his candidacy for Senate. His name was Dan J. Sullivan,” the New York Times reported.
Marc Elias lashed out at the Trump Administration and accused it of weaponizing the DOJ against Trump’s ‘political enemies.’
Via CBS News:
Marc Elias, a longtime Democratic attorney and vocal opponent of the Trump administration, is a target in the Justice Department’s criminal investigation into whether Democrats sought to confuse voters in Alaska by recruiting a candidate with the same name as Republican incumbent Senator Dan Sullivan, according to a law enforcement official and a second source familiar with the matter.
Elias is just one of a number of individuals who received either target letters, preservation letters or grand jury subpoenas from the Justice Department in connection with the investigation, which is being led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Alaska and also involves prosecutors from the Civil Rights Division’s criminal section, multiple sources said.
Approximately 20 target and preservation letters have been issued to date in the probe. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, meanwhile, has separately received a grand jury subpoena, a law enforcement source told CBS News.
“No one should be surprised that President Trump’s Department is targeting me and my law firm on Election Day,” Elias said in a statement to CBS News.
“This administration has repeatedly weaponized the DOJ against the President’s political enemies despite zero evidence of wrongdoing, and we are the latest targets.”

The Department of Justice is widening its investigation into an apparent Senate election scam in Alaska.
There, those pushing the campaign of Democrat Mary Peltola are suspected of recruiting a “decoy” Dan Sullivan who wound up on the election ballot along the Republican candidate Dan Sullivan.
A report from the Daily Mail now confirms that “dozens” of letters have been dispatched informing Democrats they are targets of an expanding investigation.
“Around 20 letters were sent on Election Day Tuesday to a number of top Democrats and attorneys, insiders told The New York Times,” the report said.
The accusations are that the Democrats recruited the same-name Dan to confuse voters and help Democrat Peltola.
Sources reported that the letters warn of allegations involving donor fraud and conspiracy.

BREAKING: The DOJ has sent CRIMINAL TARGET letters to at least 20 DEMOCRATS involved in the Decoy Dan scandal, including leftist activist lawyer Mark Elias & Democrat candidate Mary Peltola, per NYT Prosecutors are looking at possible DONOR FRAUD and CONSPIRACY charges, and have sent out 120 SUBPOENAS TODD BLANCHE: “This is a situation where everybody agrees that there is a FRAUD on the ballot. EVERYBODY agrees that there is a man running that doesn’t want to run, that doesn’t expect to be senator, that is only running to confuse Alaskan voters. And so that’s why the Department of Justice has been fighting tooth and nail to stop this process.”

Mike Dunleavy: “Alaska is going to cause a real issue, isn’t it? Not just for Alaska, but for the country. And that’s why this race is important. That’s why it’s important that it’s done the right way. We are going to investigate it. We’re going to follow the law. One of those apparently getting the notification was longtime anti-Trump activist Marc Elias, who has been part of multiple lawfare schemes targeting Trump.

Marc Elias is losing his mind after being exposed for his role in the Dan Sullivan sham in Alaska. Oddly he doesn’t mention any of that. “Donald Trump hates me… We are not going to make it through the next 2 years.” He then threatens political weaponization against the admin. Tick-tock, Marc.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, meanwhile, has separately received a grand jury subpoena, a law enforcement source told CBS News.
Elias’ pro-Democrat activism has been so extreme in this year’s election he threatened defamation complaints against reporters who asked questions about a Democrat nominee’s health.

Guam finally FLIPS, elects Republican as governor

Democrat U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson’s fretting years back on how Guam “will capsize” is claimed online to have a been a “joke” about overpopulation.
Nevertheless, it has flipped, with voters choosing a Republican governor over a Democrat who has been widely confirmed by pollsters to be a certainty for the election.
It was Johnson who said, during a 2010 House Armed Services Committee hearing, in response to a plan from Adm. Robert Williard to station 8,000 Marines there, he was worried the island would capsize. Online “sources” alleged it was not a serious comment, but “humorous” and “off-the-cuff.”

Little did we know, 10 years ago, Rep. Hank Johnson would predict Guam tipping RED in 2026. (2X speed, of course.) https://t.co/3odl9d1yFF
— JKash MAGA Queen (@JKash000) November 3, 2026

The actually flipping just happened and was reported, as ConservativeBrief affirmed that the island had picked Tony Ada for governor.
Initially tallies showed Ada and running mate EJ Calvo winning, ending eight years of Democratic leadership. Ada defeated Democratic gubernatorial nominee Therese Terlaje, who campaigned alongside lieutenant governor candidate Sabina Perez, the report said.
Outgoing Democrat Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero was term- imited.

The pollsters told you Guam was a Democrat blowout… 57.9% for the Democrat, 35.4% for the Republican. A 22-point wipeout. Then the people actually voted. Republican Tony Ada won 51.5 to 48.2 and flipped the governor’s mansion RED. The pollsters missed by 26 points. Stop believing them.

Midterm Election Incoherences, Misadventures, & Paradoxes

Midterm Election Incoherences, Misadventures, & Paradoxes

Authored by Victor Davis Hanson via American Greatness,The predicted blue wave may never materialize. And even if Democrats retake Congress, history suggests Trump could emerge stronger, not weaker, with the presidency’s expansive powers.2022 vs. 2026In June 2022, the price of gasoline topped $5 a gallon and stayed around $4 a gallon through October, on the eve of the midterms. It is currently about $4.30.The inflation rate in 2022 hit a 40-year high of 9.1 percent – and would average 5.1 percent over Joe Biden’s four-year tenure. The 2026 inflation rate is estimated to be about 3.5 percent and, over the first two years of the second Trump administration, will likely average around 3 percent. GDP for the third quarter of 2026 is higher than it was in the same quarter of 2022. The poverty rate is now lower and the annual family income higher than in November 2022.Yet we are told that gas prices and inflation are at record levels and will doom the Republicans – even though similar economic data did not harm Democrats all that much in the 2022 midterms. In the 2022 midterms, Democrats picked up a Senate seat, keeping their majority, and lost only nine House seats, barely losing control of the chamber – defying all expectations. The 2022 midterm results were then celebrated by the media as a great achievement – given that Biden was then polling at 42 percent (NPR/PBS), or about where Trump is now at 40 percent (NPR/PBS).Many pundits, remember, had predicted a red-wave wipeout, given inflation, gas prices, Biden’s increasing debility, and the Afghanistan and Ukraine messes.People were certainly seething that in 2021 the United States had left tens of billions of dollars’ worth of infrastructure and weaponry for the terrorist Taliban in Afghanistan, in the most humiliating American retreat in modern memory. (Indeed, the $47 billion spent so far on the Iran war may be less than the final cost of the abandoned bases, new embassy, weapons, and other infrastructure and equipment left for the Taliban.)And in 2022, a new theater-wide conflict had started raging in Ukraine on NATO’s doorstep, with Russia’s February 24 invasion and failed assault on Kyiv. Moreover, most observers believed that Putin’s risky gambit was precipitated by Joe Biden’s catastrophic skedaddle from Afghanistan just six months earlier, which had destroyed American deterrence in Russia’s sphere of influence. The Russians were even more confident because Biden had placed a hold in June 2021 on some $100 million worth of weapons shipments to Ukraine. And Biden’s nonsensical pre-invasion remark that the American-led NATO response to a possible Russian attack on Ukraine would hinge on whether it proved to be a “minor incursion” certainly did not convey to Putin that he should fear invading. The point? In 2026, the media have lectured us for months that the impending blue wave is the inevitable electoral payback for Trump’s crippling inflation, soaring gas prices, and war abroad – despite the fact that similar conditions did relatively little electoral damage to Democrats in 2022.Red Checkmates Blue, and Blue Checkmates Red?We are also told that flipping a Texas Senate seat to the Democrats, with a possible James Talarico victory, will be a landmark turning point, given that a Democrat has not held such a seat in 33 years. Perhaps. But why, then, in a “blue-wave year,” do few point out that Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers is running neck-and-neck with Democrat Abdul El-Sayed in a race that could give Michigan its first Republican senator in a quarter-century? And it seems strange that, in a supposedly blue-wave midterm, blue-purple states like Michigan and Oregon are seeing hotly contested Senate or gubernatorial races. We are also apprised that this inevitable blue wave reflects a nationwide disgust with Trump that will doom the last two years of his presidency. Perhaps again. But if that prediction of presidential paralysis after a midterm loss were guaranteed, it would certainly have been applicable to Clinton’s catastrophic 1994 midterm loss of 54 House seats and to Obama’s even greater 2010 midterm disaster of losing 63 House seats. (Note that Clinton also lost the Senate for the rest of his presidency in that same 1994 wipeout, as did Obama in his second-term 2014 midterms, when he lost another 13 House seats.)Both Clinton and Obama began their presidencies with near-historic margins in Congress. Clinton started his first term with 57 Democratic senators and 258 Democratic House seats. In 2009, Obama enjoyed perhaps an even stronger Democratic Congress, with 60 Democratic and pro-Obama independent senators and 257 House Democrats. Yet both presidents spent their final years in office with solid Republican majorities in both houses of Congress after squandering huge inaugural congressional advantages. The Imperial Presidency Is Still ImperialStill, such radical turnarounds did not necessarily hamper either president all that much.In his last two years in office, Bill Clinton was easily acquitted after being impeached by the House. Despite (or because of) a Republican Congress, Clinton managed to continue his historic balanced budgets (1998-2001). Clinton also led the NATO bombing effort against Serbia and held an Israeli-Palestinian summit and simply ignored occasional Republican criticism, anger, and demands to seek congressional authorization.Obama likewise should have been neutered after he lost the Senate in 2014. But he surely did not end up feeling confined by the Republican majorities in both houses of Congress. In fact, in his last year, Obama continued his mad solo bomber routine – as the United States dropped more than 26,000 bombs on seven nations (Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Syria, Yemen, and Libya), all without congressional approval. He kept up his characteristic targeted assassination strikes (well over 500 in total for his two terms), again without congressional authority and without much worry about the nearly 800 civilians and six U.S. citizens who were killed as “collateral damage.” He assumed rightly that his “antiwar” party would either keep mum or cheer him on, and the Republicans would make no move to cut off funds. Moreover, in some ways Obama became even more radical – and more emboldened – once he lost Congress. He became defiant, acted unilaterally, and committed to the Paris Agreement, the Iran deal, and normalization of relations with Cuba. The constitutional lawyer Obama routinely blew off Congress, cementing both the Iran deal and the Paris Agreement as if they were not treaties and thus needed no Senate approval. The point of these comparisons is not to show that losing Congress does no harm to a president’s administration. It often means no more Senate confirmations of appointees. It stymies legislation and forces presidents to rely on executive orders that can be easily overturned by a successor from the opposing party.Yet presidents have found ways of working around Congress – even if these are often constitutionally dubious, as in the case of a defiant Obama, who openly bragged of his “pen and phone” executive-order powers. And a midterm loss, especially in the second term, can sometimes even boost a president’s popularity. Indeed, in 1998, Clinton reached the highest approval level of his presidency at 73 percent and would leave office in January 2001 with an approval rating of 66 percent.Obama left office, according to a Gallup poll, with a 59 percent approval rating. Both Clinton and Obama had once polled dismally below 40 percent. But somehow, when a president loses Congress, strange things often follow. The opposition lets its success go to its head. Firebrands go overboard both rhetorically and in obstructing the president – thereby generating sympathy for the White House, which is seen as standing up to extremist outliers in Congress. Moreover, as the next presidential campaigns heat up during a lame-duck president’s last years, the public gets turned off by the back-and-forth hits and vitriol. Voters sometimes begin to appreciate the quieter president as “above the fray,” or at least not so much in the headlines. In the case of Obama, the more he stayed out of sight on the golf links, the more people began to prefer the abstract idea of Barack Obama to the once-familiar reality. And we should not forget late-campaign surprises whose effects few can anticipate – like Mitt Romney’s secretly recorded 2012 dismissal of 47 percent of the electorate as dependent on government, which hurt him, or the 2016 Access Hollywood IED that did not destroy Donald Trump as anticipated. The antisemitic ad supporting El-Sayed and the pathetic caper involving Sullivan in Alaska may or may not prove critical in close elections – and perhaps even beyond Alaska and Michigan.Waves, Polls, and Lame Ducks: Conventional Wisdom or Ignorance? In sum, we should remember a few things about the upcoming midterms.First, the blue wave may not materialize, just as the red wave did not materialize in 2022, despite public unhappiness with the Ukraine war, inflation, and gas prices.Consider how the anti-Netanyahu surge that was supposed to drive him out of office was recently stymied in the Israeli elections. Before and on election night, the domestic and global anti-Netanyahu media and polls were ecstatic that his Likud party surely could no longer forge a parliamentary majority. They preened that Netanyahu was finally gone for good. A few hours later, last-minute returns dashed that “sure thing” consensus, as Netanyahu’s Likud won more seats than any other party. Netanyahu may be able to remain in office by creating new coalitions and calling for new elections. When and how do these predicted electoral waves not overwhelm the status quo?Often, they deflate because voters vent their frustrations with an incumbent during the campaign season, but when they finally cast their ballots in private, they start to consider the alternative. The voters begrudgingly decide that the incumbent or the incumbent party’s candidates are at least the lesser of two evils, in the spirit of “better the devil you know than the devil you don’t.”In 2026, the rise of openly Islamist-socialist candidates and the proliferation of venomous antisemitic tropes and ads may have made the midterms, for many voters, less a conventional contest between Democrats and Republicans than a choice between importing Europe’s troubles and preserving normality at home.Second, given our unique system of constitutional government, even if the blue wave does happen, presidents on occasion can become more popular after losing Congress. They can also, even without majorities in Congress, use executive orders to do a lot of things domestically and almost anything they wish abroad – as long as they keep ironclad support among their own sizable congressional minority and thus prevent veto-proof congressional action. The bottom line is that these midterms may not go quite as predicted. And even if they do, this much-predicted blue wave may have far less impact than most think – given the ever-growing powers of a president and his executive branch and the unsavory nature of many of his new would-be opponents. We publish a variety of perspectives.
