The AI agent race creates a new battleground for payments

October 9, 2026 MMN Editor Filed Under: Uncategorized

For years, the most AI could do in digital commerce was help people choose. It surfaced alternatives, summarized reviews and helped figure out which product was worth the money. That was useful. It was not a structural shift.

The next phase is something different. Agents are beginning to act, not just advise. And that changes every relationship in the transaction.

Instead of pointing a consumer toward a product, an AI agent can now search for the item, verify eligibility for a discount, generate a payment credential and complete the purchase. The consumer never touches the checkout page. McKinsey project that model could represent between $3 trillion and $5 trillion in global commerce by 2030.

Also read: Elon Musk delivers 6-word warning on future of employment

Payment networks face a question they were not built to answer

The payment system was built for one thing: a person pressing a button. Card networks and banks have always asked two questions: is this credential valid, and does this transaction look legitimate? AI agents add a third. Is the software making the purchase actually allowed to spend this person’s money?

“The biggest change is that the customer’s intent, the purchasing decision and the payment can increasingly happen through an agent rather than a person navigating a website,” Kenneth Shek, CEO of Moca Network and Head of Projects at Animoca Brands, told The Street in an interview.

That is exactly the problem Animoca Brands set out to solve. Working with fintech companies Reap and Pivota, the company is building infrastructure that lets an agent verify a user’s eligibility, locate a product and generate a payment credential locked to a specific merchant, amount and time window.

Animoca’s AIR identity layer and Minds AI agent connect to Reap’s payments stack and Pivota’s live pricing data. A controlled merchant showcase comes first, with a live pilot using real transactions to follow.

Payment providers will need to think in finer increments. A blanket approval to spend $200 is not permission to spend it anywhere, at any time. Visa and Mastercard are already building frameworks for exactly that distinction. But most of the infrastructure for machine-initiated transactions is still being designed.

Owning the shopping experience is not the same as owning the pipes beneath it.Cravetiger / Getty Images

The payment credential may need to be rebuilt for machines

The standard payment card was designed for a person. It was never meant for software, and the difference matters when the stakes involve someone’s real money.

“Giving an agent permission to shop should not mean handing it an unrestricted card,” Shek said. “The authorization should be specific: which user it represents, what it can buy, which merchant it can pay, the maximum amount and when that permission expires.”

In that model, a purchase-specific credential is generated for each transaction, scoped to a single merchant, amount and time window. If anything changes, the transaction fails. The agent cannot reinterpret the user’s instructions to make the numbers work.

Nate Herk, CEO of AI Automation Society, learned that lesson firsthand. An agent his team built once misread a task. Instead of drafting an email, it sent one, pushing a discount code out to 150,000 people.

“Payments work the same way,” Herk told The Street in an interview. “Make every purchase need a human’s approval, or cap spending per week or month. Put the rule in the card, not in the prompt.”

The limits on what an agent can do should not depend on the agent remembering them correctly. They need to live at the infrastructure level, where the money actually moves.

Whoever controls the agent controls the purchase decision

The money question is just the start. If agents become how people shop, whoever runs the agent gets to decide what they see. Which products appear, which merchants get recommended, which payment method gets used. That is an enormous amount of commercial influence concentrated in a single interface.

“Whoever owns the assistant people shop through has the most leverage,” Herk said. “That company decides which products you see and which checkout gets used, which is Google’s search leverage carried all the way to the purchase.”

More AI:

Nvidia just made a move Wall Street wasn’t ready for

Microsoft just took sides in AI policy fight

OpenAI just disclosed something genuinely alarming

Merchants already know what it means to depend on a platform for visibility. Google’s dominance in search showed how quickly discovery becomes a toll road. Getting recommended by an AI agent may end up working the same way.

And consumers will face their own version of the problem. An agent with commercial relationships may not always surface the product that is actually best for the buyer.

The financial rails underneath could still be contested

Owning the shopping experience is not the same as owning the pipes beneath it. Banks, card networks and payment processors would still do what they have always done: authorize, settle, handle fraud and resolve disputes. But more of the transactions crossing their rails would come from machines they never vetted.

Sachi Kamiya, Director of Venture and Growth at Sentient Foundation, sees that gap as a real opening for new competition.

“AI platforms could control the consumer interface, while payment networks, banks and wallet providers compete to process the transactions behind it,” Kamiya told The Street in an interview.

Blockchain is one of the technologies competing for that infrastructure role. AI agents can use funded wallets to transact in stablecoins, moving value without relying on every intermediary a conventional payment touches. That does not mean blockchain becomes the default. But it gives AI companies an alternative as they build machine-to-machine commerce.

“My hope is that this competition reduces traditional financial institutions’ control over payments,” Kamiya said. “Blockchain could play an important role by enabling faster settlement and potentially lower transaction costs, although fees and safeguards vary across systems.”

Identity becomes the foundation of the whole system

Strip away the technology and the same question keeps coming up: who does this agent actually work for? The merchant needs to know it represents a real buyer.

The payment provider needs to know it has authority over the account. And the buyer needs to know the agent is staying inside the limits they set, not inventing new ones on the fly.

One answer is to keep those functions in separate layers rather than bundling them. Identity, intent, product discovery and payment each handled by a different part of the system. That separation could allow users to move between agents without losing financial permissions, membership status or purchasing history.

That portability matters more than it looks right now. A consumer who gives an agent payment authority and earns benefits through it will think twice before switching. The company holding those credentials has real leverage.

In a market where AI platforms are competing for the same consumer, the one that earns trust first may be the hardest to walk away from. When the agent is spending your money, the question of trust is not abstract anymore.

Why we love this deal

Whether you love or hate your birthday, we can all agree that birthstone jewelry is pretty special. The gemstones that represent any of the 12 months of the year add a gorgeous pop of color to a pair of earrings, a ring, necklace, or bracelet, plus it’s a bit of a personalized touch that shares something about you that basic gold or silver can’t. And the best part? You don’t need to invest in real rubies, emeralds, or diamonds to get sheen and shine when lab-grown gems. The Swarovski crystals like the ones in the Cate & Chloe Birthstone Necklace do the job just as well — for a more affordable price.

The $29 necklace, already a budget-friendly purchase, is even more marked down at Walmart thanks to Walmart Deals and a limited-time Flash deal that’s giving you 48% off. Save $14 and get the stunning birthstone pendant in 12 available stones on sale for just $15 right now.

Why do shoppers love it?

Shoppers think jewelry needs to cost a lot to be of any value, but lots of well-crafted, long-lasting pieces are available for a variety of price points. This birthstone necklace is proof of that.

The perfect holiday gift or stocking stuffer, it’s a great get now that takes care of a little holiday shopping well ahead of December. The 18-inch neck chain is adorned with an 18K white gold-plated charm, featuring a stunning Swarovski crystal in the center.  The pendant, which measures 5.6 millimeters long, 7.8 millimeters wide, and 14 millimeters high, has a noticeable drop but isn’t overly large or ostentatious. The perfect accessory that doesn’t overwhelm your neck.

The necklace chain and pendant setting are made with 18K white gold-plated brass, giving the necklace lots of strength and durability. The brass base gives the jewelry a sturdy base, while the 18K white gold-plating adds that bright, silvery sheen that luxurious jewelry has. It also ensures that your jewelry doesn’t tarnish or wear down with exposure to moisture, sweat, or friction the way brass and copper does when it turns that greenish hue everyone is familiar with.

The Swarovski crystal, which can be any one of the 12 birthstones of the year, is round with a six prong setting to keep it nice and secure. It sits on an adjustable cable chain that measures up to 18 inches but can be set to 16 inches, with a lobster clasp.

Related: Walmart’s $110 5-pack of 18-karat birthstone earrings is 86% off

Because of the 18K white gold-plating, the necklace is hypoallergenic and sensitive skin-friendly, but just be aware that plating can be worn down so if you get skin reactions from metals like copper or brass, be more cautious with your jewelry to prevent that from happening.

Are You Only Paying the Minimum on Your Credit Card Bills? Here’s How to Break the Cycle

October 9, 2026 MMN Editor Filed Under: Uncategorized

If it feels like you can’t get ahead on your credit card debt, you’re not alone.
Twenty-eight percent of debt-laden people can only make the minimum monthly payments on their accounts, according to a recent survey of 1,800 Americans with at least $10,000 in unsecured debt from Freedom Debt Relief and Money.com.
It’s little surprise many borrowers aren’t able to prioritize debt payoff, given the pressure of high prices for housing, groceries, gas and more. Once you factor in the steep interest rates that credit cards and other unsecured debt often come with, shrinking your balances seems even more challenging. Yet while it is understandable that so many people can only afford to tread water with their debt, it is still very expensive.
“On a typical unsecured balance carrying double-digit interest, most of that payment covers interest first, principal second,” says Jeff Judge, financial advisor and managing partner at Chesapeake Financial Planners. “The debt doesn’t shrink, it just sits there collecting fees.”
Say you have $10,000 in credit card debt with an annual percentage rate (APR) of 21% — a typical rate for credit cards. If your minimum required payment is 2%, your monthly bill would be $200. But if you only pay that amount each month, it will take you 10 years to pay off the card while accruing a total of nearly $14,000 in interest on top of the $10,000 principal.
Every bit you’re able to increase your monthly payment can save you a significant amount of money in the long run. Here are five ways to break the debt cycle.

1. Review your interest rates
You’ll want to pay the minimums due on any debt tied to your home or car. From there, you need to look at the rates on your credit cards as well as any personal loans, buy now, pay later plans and other unsecured debts you have to make a game plan.
“Most people never look,” Judge says. He tells his clients to pull every statement and rank balances by APR, not by size. “Pay the highest rate first regardless of the balance, that’s where the bleeding is worst.”
That strategy of focusing on the highest interest first is called the avalanche method, and it typically entails paying only the minimum on all your debts except for the most expensive one, which is where you’ll shovel any extra cash. It’s the most cost-efficient way to pay down debt. But if you need small wins to stay motivated, you can try the snowball method, which involves paying off the smallest balance first, then moving onto the second-smallest and so on.
2. Call your creditors
Speaking directly to a creditor may work better than you’d assume, since they don’t want to lose your business to a balance transfer credit card or another consolidation method.
Tell them you want to continue paying, and remain current on the loan, but ask what hardship or alternative payment options may be available, says Jon Lapp, a financial planner and founder of Haven Financial Advisors.
“They don’t want you to default either, so they are often willing to work with you,” he adds. The lender may be able to offer you a temporary reduced interest rate or change your loan agreement in another way that could offer you a bit of flexibility.
3. Consider consolidation options
Debt consolidation is a way to replace multiple debts with one single monthly payment that ideally comes with a lower interest rate than what you’ve been paying. It can be especially helpful for people overwhelmed from juggling several accounts, but keep in mind that consolidation and refinance options are typically easier to obtain for people with high income and good credit.
A common option is a balance transfer credit card that has an introductory period of 0% interest. If you go this route, make sure you can pay off the balance before the interest rate jumps, which is typically after less than 18 months. You’ll have to be disciplined about not running up a balance on the new card, too.
If you can qualify for a personal loan that shaves several percentage points off the APRs you’re paying, then you can also consider using those funds to pay off your other debts so you can focus on one predictable monthly payment. Just be sure to carefully review your new rate, any fees and your repayment term so you fully understand the cost.
Homeowners with sufficient equity may want to consider consolidating with a home equity loan or HELOC, which typically come with lower rates than personal loans since the financing is secured by your home. But because your home is used as collateral, you’ll want to make sure the payments for the new loan fit comfortably within your budget before you borrow.
With each option, the idea is that you’ll use the money freed up by the lower interest rates to target your principal balance.
“Each has some tradeoffs, but they are all worth considering if it lowers the interest rate and reduces the payoff timeline,” Lapp says. “Regardless of how the debt is handled, the underlying budget and spending gap still need to be addressed to ultimately make meaningful progress. Otherwise, they could end up with both a consolidated loan, and new credit card balances that continue to grow over time.”
4. Create a budget to free up money
If you’re only able to make the monthly payments, you likely don’t have much wiggle room in your budget. But doing a careful assessment may help you find one or two places where you can trim your spending.
“Budgeting for debt repayment isn’t about a stricter grocery budget,” Judge says. “It’s about the fixed costs nobody questions.”
He recommends auditing your subscriptions and calling to ask for better deals on your cell phone and internet bills. Shopping around for insurance (especially auto and homeowners insurance) at every renewal can free up some money, too. You should also redirect any raise or bonus straight to the highest-rate balance before lifestyle creep eats it.
5. Seek professional help
Borrowers who are struggling to afford just the minimum due each month may need some extra help. One option is reaching out to a credit counselor via the National Foundation for Credit Counseling or Financial Counseling Association of America. Counselors can help you create a budget, get copies of your credit report and more.
“They can help evaluate your situation and come up with a debt management plan,” Lapp says. “And, if needed, they may be able to help you find a reputable debt-relief company.”
When you enroll in a debt management plan, which requires a modest monthly fee, the credit counseling agency often gets creditors to slash the interest rate on your debt to make repayment easier. You’ll then make one monthly payment to the agency and the agency pays your creditors.
Another option is working with a debt settlement company. These companies negotiate with your lenders on your behalf to try to “settle” your debts for less than the full amount owed. They charge a fee based on a percentage of the debt you enroll with — though you only pay if they are successful in getting a settlement. Because negotiating with creditors typically requires a borrower to be past-due on their accounts, this option is best for consumers who are either already behind or at risk or becoming delinquent.

Amazon’s $120 farmhouse storage cabinet is 5 feet tall and spacious enough for practically anything

TheStreet aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Built-in cabinets in the home are a blessing. The more you have, the more you use. That’s because, as part of a shopping culture, most of us tend to have more things to store than we have actual storage space. There are ways to deal with this conundrum, like making use of outdoor storage sheds or mini dressers, but those aren’t your only possible solutions. There’s a storage option available that offers both practical and aesthetic benefits, and you can find them at reasonable prices as well. Farmhouse storage cabinets are incredibly popular right now, and with good reason.

With continued increases in housing costs, square footage is at a premium. Home prices are increasing while home sizes are decreasing. That’s why making the very most of any space you have is of the utmost importance. The right farmhouse storage cabinet can help you do that, and do it in style. There’s one cabinet in particular that caught our eye. It’s available at Amazon, and we think it may be your best bet for adding storage space to your home while also adding a touch of visual interest.

The Cofar Tall Farmhouse Storage Cabinet is a wonderful example of what you can get at Amazon to keep your items safe and sound. Measuring 5 feet tall, the pantry can hold more than you might expect. Its narrow footprint won’t take up much space on the floor, and three of the four shelves are adjustable and fully removable. The metal construction is lightweight and durable while also being fully waterproof and rust resistant. Each door has a lovely farmhouse-style cross-hatch design that gives the piece dimension and an interesting touch. This may be the best farmhouse storage cabinet example we’ve found, and it’s only $120 at the moment.

Benefits of farmhouse storage cabinets

There are lots of advantages to buying a farmhouse storage cabinet. Aside from the most obvious plus, which is additional storage space, they also save space because they’re typically a vertical design; they fit aesthetically and practically in almost any room, and the farmhouse look conceals what is ostensibly a utilitarian piece of furniture. The vertical design of most farmhouse cabinets is an intentional choice by the manufacturer to keep the footprint at a minimum. Much of a home’s empty wall space is a wasted opportunity, so these pantries make the most of that space.

Because of their versatile look, these cabinets are well suited for use in a kitchen, living room, bathroom, or bedroom. Some might even want to use one in the garage. In addition to the stylistic benefits of the cabinets, they’re most often made from metal or engineered wood. That makes them highly water resistant and durable. The peace of mind you get from having furniture that can be in damp environments like kitchens and bathrooms is priceless. It allows you the freedom to move the piece between rooms as your needs change as well.

Finally, the beautiful ornamentation on these cabinets allows them to hide in plain sight. Guests need not know that what looks like a decorative armoire is concealing overflow linens, messy craft supplies, or a stockpile of worthless Beanie Babies. The farmhouse aesthetic is the perfect cover for a piece of furniture with a primary function of storing items that have nowhere else to go.

More farmhouse storage cabinets

If the Cofar Tall Farmhouse Storage Cabinet isn’t exactly what you need, then fear not. Amazon is one of the best sellers of storage cabinets of every type. We’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite farmhouse options currently available from the retail giant. Browse the selections, and you’re likely to find one (or more) to suit your exact needs.
