Another airline grounds flights after crash
After a particularly horrific plane crash, standard procedure in many parts of the world is to ground the plane model that crashed or in some cases the airline’s entire fleet amid investigations.
Flamingo Air, a small regional airline shuttling locals and tourists between the different islands of the Bahamas, remains grounded after a Cessna 402 plane crashed into the bushes on Andros Island in a July 2026 accident that took the lives of all nine passengers and the pilot on board.
In Peru, a similar accident occurred at the start of August when a Caravan C-208 plane operated by tourist carrier Aerodiana crashed four miles from the Nazca Lines archeological site and took the lives of all 11 crew and passengers on board.
Air Frontier cancels all flights on twin-engine Baron planes after crash
The latest major accident took place in the Gulf of Carpentaria sea off the northern coast of Australia. A Beechcraft Baron 58 twin-engine piston utility plane operated by Darwin-based charter airline Air Frontier “crashed into the water near Isle Woodah” at approximately midday on Aug. 25 while on a non-commercial flight to move the plane to another location.
Water and air search and rescue operations for the pilot and the plane has been ongoing for the last 24 hours but, according to a statement released by the local police, “no aircraft wreckage or persons have been located” yet.

“The aircraft was undertaking a non-commercial repositioning flight with no passengers from Gove to Numbulwar, with the pilot believed to be the sole occupant on board,” Air Frontier said in a statement on the accident.
Amid the search and investigation into what caused the accident, Air Frontier also said that it has grounded all of its Beech Baron planes “pending advice from the relevant authorities.”
The airline runs fights delivering cargo and community supplies to remote communities while its fleet contains two Baron 55 and eight Baron 58 planes that are now also grounded.

Other planes, including a Cessna 404 Titan and a Pa31-350 Piper Chieftain, are used to transfer passengers on charter and scenic flights and remain in operation amid the crash rescue efforts.

Airlines that shut down in 2026:
Flamingo Air and Aerodiana: The regional airlines with large client bases among tourists to the Bahamas and Peru, respectively, currently have suspended AOCs after fatal accidents in their home countries in July 2026.
Spirit Airlines: The largest airline shutdown of the year occurred when Spirit Airlines canceled all remaining flights on May 2. Although the airline had filed for Chapter 11 protection twice before, the skyrocketing price of jet fuel dealt the final blow.
Magnicharters: While not yet fully shut down, the Mexican low-cost airline canceled all flights and filed for bankruptcy in a shutdown that left thousands stranded.
Starflite Aviation: Houston-based Starflite Aviation had its AOC license revoked in March 2026, amid FAA claims that owners falsified pilot training records to bypass safety audits.
AlpAvia: Slovenian charter airline AlpAvia also shut down in March 2026 due to financial problems.

Popular movie theater chain closes another location after 25 years
For moviegoers, some theaters become more than places to watch the latest blockbuster. They become part of the neighborhood, familiar landmarks where generations of movie fans have spent countless hours making memories with family and friends or escaping reality for a while.
But even as moviegoing rebounds, major theater chains continue to reshape their footprints, closing some locations while investing heavily in others.
Now, a longtime neighborhood theater is preparing to screen its final movies after more than two and a half decades.
The company behind the closure is AMC Theaters. Founded in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1920, AMC is the world’s largest movie exhibition company with 845 theaters and 9,530 screens across 11 countries.
AMC Theaters is closing another location
AMC Theaters (AMC) is closing its AMC Kips Bay 15 location at 570 2nd Ave. in Manhattan, New York, by the end of 2026, the company confirmed. An exact date has not yet been announced as details are still being finalized.
The 15-screen multiplex is one of AMC’s largest theaters in Manhattan and has operated at the location since 1999, with AMC taking over in 2006.
The closure is tied to the property owner’s decision to exercise its contractual right to terminate AMC’s theater lease before its scheduled expiration, according to the company.
The closure will also remove one of the East Side’s moviegoing options, including its IMAX auditorium.
Customers will still have other AMC options throughout Manhattan, including:
AMC Empire 25: 234 W 42nd St
AMC Lincoln Square 13: 1998 Broadway
AMC 84th Street 6: 2310 Broadway
AMC 34th Street 14: 312 W 34th St
AMC Village 7: 66 Third Ave E 11th St
AMC 19th St. East 6: 890 Broadway
AMC Orpheum 7: 1538 Third Ave E 86th St
AMC Magic Johnson Harlem 9: 2309 Frederick Douglass Blvd

Recent AMC Theaters closures
The AMC Kips Bay 15 closure comes as AMC continues to adjust its theater footprint following years of disruption to the movie exhibition business.
The company ended June 30, 2026, with 524 theaters in the U.S., down 16 from 540 a year earlier. Globally, AMC operated 845 theaters with 9,530 screens, compared with 864 theaters and 9,717 screens during the same period in 2025, according to its second quarter of fiscal 2026 earnings report.
At the same time, AMC has continued investing in its strongest locations rather than simply pulling back across its entire portfolio.
The company’s strategy is outlined in AMC’s Go Plan, announced in November 2024. AMC said it expects to invest between $1 billion and $1.5 billion over the next four to seven years to improve theaters in the U.S. and Europe, including upgraded seating, premium large-format screens, laser projection, and other enhancements.
AMC Theaters sees stronger results after years of challenges
The theater closures come as AMC’s financial results show a significant rebound in movie attendance and revenue.
During the second quarter of fiscal 2026, AMC’s U.S. performance included:
Total revenue: Increased 13% year over year
Admissions revenue: Rose 11.4%
Attendance: Climbed 12%
Food and beverage revenue: Grew 14.2%
Food and beverage per patron: Was up 2.1%
Average ticket price: Decreased 0.5%
AMC’s total company results were even stronger. Revenue increased 14.2% to $1.6 billion during the quarter, while attendance rose 13.5% to 71.3 million.
Chairman and CEO Adam Aron said the company had seen significant progress in both its U.S. and European businesses during the quarter, pointing to the strength of the domestic box office and AMC’s ability to grow revenue faster than the overall U.S. industry.
That makes the Kips Bay closure a notable example of how AMC’s current strategy is not simply about shrinking its theater footprint.
The company is closing some locations while directing capital toward theaters it believes can deliver stronger long-term returns and a more premium moviegoing experience.
Here’s some of my previous coverage of store closures:

For Kips Bay moviegoers, however, the strategy means saying goodbye to a neighborhood theater that has been part of Manhattan’s East Side for more than 25 years. AMC expects the theater to continue operating through the end of 2026, with a final closing date still to be announced.

Walmart’s patio chair covers keep your furniture protected year-round for only $25
TheStreet aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.
Why we love this deal
Outdoor furniture can take a lot of abuse from the elements. A pair of lounge chairs that gets used through the warmer months can end up exposed to rain, sun, and other weather between uses. Covers can be especially useful for patio seating that stays outside year-round, helping to reduce the amount of cleaning and maintenance needed and preventing the need to find storage space during the off-season.
The Adiqo Waterproof Patio Chair Covers are a solid investment to help keep your patio furniture safe from daily wear and tear from the elements. Whether it’s raining, snowing, or a hot, sunny day, these covers will keep your furniture protected and ready to use any time. They’re quick to put on and take off, and can be stored easily in the garage or in a closet indoors. Shoppers can get two covers for just $25 at Walmart.

These covers are designed for rocking chairs, swivel chairs, and glider chairs, fitting chairs up to 32 inches wide, 35 inches deep, and 36 inches tall. They’re made from 4200 ultraviolet-resistant polyester with a waterproof polyurethane backing that keeps your chairs safe and dry. The three layers prevent water from seeping through the cover while still allowing moisture to escape, and can protect against a range of weather conditions, including rain, snow, high-UV sunlight, pollen, and other weather that otherwise can wear down the frame and cushioning of your patio chairs, leading to more money spent on replacing them.

The covers easily stay in place once set on the chairs. A drawstring along the bottom allows a personalized fit, while the four fastening straps attach directly to the chair legs to help keep the cover secure, even in larger windstorms. The seams are double-stitched, allowing the covers to stay intact even after months of use. When the chairs are uncovered, the covers can be removed and placed in their included zip carrying bags for storage, allowing you to fit them neatly in the closet without worrying about getting your other items dirty.
