How Required Minimum Distributions Can Raise the Tax on Your Social Security
Retirement savers typically need to start taking required minimum distributions (RMDs) around age 73, though the exact age depends on when you were born. RMDs can have an immediate impact on your Social Security benefits.
Here’s how RMDs can impact your taxes and how to plan ahead in order to potentially lower your tax bill.

The basics of RMDs
The RMD age takes effect depending on when you were born, but the calculation for determining your minimum withdrawal requirement remains the same. You will have to divide the balance in your retirement savings accounts that are subject to RMDs as of Dec. 31 of the prior year by the IRS’s life expectancy factor.
As you get older, the life expectancy factor changes, resulting in a higher withdrawal rate each year. For instance, the IRS lists 20.2 as the life expectancy factor for an 80-year-old. If this 80-year-old had $1 million in a traditional 401(k), here’s how you calculate the RMD:
RMD = $1 million / life expectancy factor
RMD = $1 million / 20.2
RMD = $49,504.95
Required minimum distributions do not apply to Roth accounts. You must only make withdrawals from traditional plans, such as traditional 401(k)s and traditional IRAs.
The domino effect
It doesn’t take much of an RMD to push you into a higher income bracket, especially when it comes to combined income for the Social Security calculation. Once your combined income reaches a certain threshold, up to 85% of your Social Security benefits can be taxed. A single filer who exceeds $34,000 in combined income — and a married couple who exceeds $44,000 — will have to pay taxes on up to 85% of their Social Security benefits.
Combined income is your adjusted gross income plus tax-exempt interest plus 50% of your Social Security benefits. RMDs count as adjusted gross income.
How to potentially lower your tax bill
One way to potentially lower your taxes is to space out your withdrawals over multiple years. Qualified charitable distributions also allocate some of your money to a good cause while reducing your taxable income.
Qualified longevity annuities contract (QLAC) can kick the ball further down the road, letting you defer realized taxes on some of your RMD until you turn 85. That’s when you must start taking distributions from a QLAC, but some people start earlier.
If you are still several years away from turning 73, you can use Roth conversions. Moving a small amount of your traditional 401(k) to a Roth IRA each year can spread the tax hit over time and minimize the impact on Social Security benefits by the time RMDs take effect.
Why you shouldn’t skip RMDs
Although RMDs will increase your taxable income, it’s worse if you avoid them. The IRS will charge a 25% penalty for missing your RMD. However, that penalty will be reduced to 10% if the mistake is corrected within two years.
You have until April 1 of the following year to take your first RMD. Every subsequent year, the deadline is December 31 of the same year.
Forecasting your projected RMD can help you determine how much you should move to a Roth each year to minimize the tax impact, and what other measures may be necessary.

“Mach Tuck”? Investigators Say Learjet 60 May Have Broken Apart Before Florida Crash
The Learjet 60 that crashed on Sunday afternoon in Palm Beach County, Florida, killing all nine people aboard, may have broken apart before slamming into the ground. The Learjet 60 (N722BD) was flying from Austin, Texas, to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas (with passengers likely visiting Harbor Island) when it encountered severe thunderstorms and turbulence. ‼️DEVELOPING: RADAR SHOWS JET FLEW INTO A STORM CORE AT 35,000 FEETAnalysis of Miami NEXRAD radar shows the Learjet 60 (N722BD) entered a thunderstorm core near Wellington at about 12:48 PM ET, just before it crashed in Palm Beach County. At 35,000 feet, radar echoes around… pic.twitter.com/Tt83Gpcck5— Live Storm Chasers (@LiveStormChaser) November 1, 2026
The young woman copilot reported icing at 35,000 feet, followed shortly by overspeed conditions and an accelerating descent rate of between 10,000 and 22,000 feet per minute.”The weather conditions are a major focus of the investigation,” NTSB board member Tom Chapman said, quoted by Reuters. Investigators have found evidence suggesting an in-flight breakup and may locate aircraft parts some distance from the main impact area, he added. The Learjet’s maximum operating limits, VMO and MMO, change with altitude. At the altitude the jet was flying before the crash, the operating limit was around Mach 0.81:There are concerns that icing and moderate turbulence led to a phenomenon called “Mach tuck,” in which a jet’s nose pitches downward at high speeds as airflow over parts of the wing becomes supersonic and shock waves form. (excuse the tiktok video), apparently it *could have* also been something called “mach tuck”. Commercial aircraft have been built structurally to prevent this. If so, it may explain why the pilot lacked sufficient elevator control due to an in-flight breakup as the aircraft exceeded its maximum operating speed. 9th Circuit block on California noncitizen voter probe lifted, then restored in legal boomerang
A federal appeals court briefly lifted a block on the Trump administration’s efforts to investigate alleged voting by noncitizens in California, then reversed course hours later, sending the dispute to the full 11-judge 9th Circuit for rehearing.Earlier Monday night, a three-judge panel granted the Justice Department’s request to pause a temporary restraining order issued by a San Francisco federal judge. That order had barred the administration from making further requests to set aside ballots under the warning of prosecution of state and local election officials who declined. The panel said the government was likely to prevail in arguing that its requests and criminal investigations were core executive functions.FEDERAL JUDGE BLOCKS TRUMP DOJ’S THREATS AGAINST ELECTION WORKERS AHEAD OF 2026 MIDTERMSHours later, the full 9th Circuit vacated the ruling and ordered the case reheard by all 11 active judges, according to the court’s order. The move restored the district court’s restrictions while the full court considers the dispute.”The TRO issued by a San Francisco judge purporting to restrict DOJ investigations into election officials has been appropriately lifted,” First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli wrote on X before the temporary restraining order was restored. “Conducting criminal investigations is a core function of the executive branch, not the judiciary.”The case against investigating allege noncitizen voting was brought by labor unions and civil rights groups, including the NAACP and the League of United Latin American Citizens. They argued that DOJ and Homeland Security letters to election officials, which warned of potential criminal liability over ballots linked to suspected noncitizens, amounted to intimidation.CALIFORNIA ELECTION WORKERS HIT WITH CRIMINAL SUBPOENAS AS TRUMP DOJ TURNS UP HEAT IN VOTING SHOWDOWNThe Trump administration argues that allowing illegal voting and halting investigative work could lead to prosecution for those involved.”Americans deserve to have confidence in their elections,” Essayli wrote late Monday night. “The courts have made it clear that the preferred remedy for election law violations is criminal prosecution. Building on Operation Protect the Vote, we will continue investigating and charging those who violate election laws or assist in their violation.”The appeals court whiplash followed a separate Supreme Court rejection of the Trump administration’s effort to protect the vote Monday. The justices denied an emergency request to require California to set aside mail ballots from roughly 20,000 registered voters federal officials flagged as likely noncitizens.BLANCHE ANNOUNCES CHARGES AGAINST 10 PERMANENT RESIDENTS ACCUSED OF MINNESOTA VOTER FRAUD”We will continue pursuing every available legal avenue to protect the integrity of our elections and ensure federal law is enforced,” acting U.S. Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter wrote on X.The administration had demanded that California separate any allegedly unlawful ballots from other ballots and not count them until those voters are determined to be U.S. citizens through investigations that the state has rejected without review.”Once California commingles the challenged ballots with lawful ones, there is no way to get the challenged ballots back,” the Justice Department wrote in its request to the Supreme Court.DHS OFFICIAL VOWS TO PROSECUTE AND DEPORT NONCITIZENS CAUGHT ILLEGALLY VOTING AHEAD OF MIDTERMSThe DOJ has been forced into a legal Catch-22 where it has to watch votes be cast in California, even if they have alleged evidence of them being noncitizen voters, and then pursue legal action afterward.Attorney General Todd Blanche announced that 63 people were charged with election crimes Monday.”Today’s announcement marks the largest surge of voter-fraud arrests since President [Donald] Trump returned to office,” Blanche wrote in a statement. “These foreign nationals allegedly took advantage of the trust of the American people and flouted the laws that govern our nation’s elections. This Department of Justice will continue investigating and prosecuting voter fraud to restore confidence in our electoral system.”The DOJ has charged 195 illegal immigrants across 25 states with illegal voting and voter registration offenses in the past nine weeks. There have been charges against 239 people with voting fraud offenses since Trump returned to the White House, according to the DOJ.

When we did, I was always leery of letting them pick out my produce and fresh meat. Now we just make random grocery and costco runs when we need something or have decided to cook. Other than that, we eat out a lot and I see that getting even more frequent once the final child goes to college next year (I’ve noticed older couples eat out a lot). Personally, my preferred time for grocery shopping is 10:00 PM on a weeknight or 6:00 AM on a Saturday. Hate crowds.2) On the college football question. First, OU is having a pretty bad season (except against my Longhorns) so you might expect attendance to be down. That photo might not be indicative of the whole sport. Second, big college stadiums are always slow to fill up pregame and that picture was obviously taken before kickoff. ALL THAT BEING SAID… I have noticed that my personal interest in CFB is waning. I still love gambling and staying up late drinking on the porch on saturdays, but the free agent / mercenary culture is really kind of off-putting.Those aren’t “our guys” anymore, they are someone else’s guys we are paying to come play for us. Texas is the worst. We can pay the most for players and we still have the same problems year to year. It does tend to strangle out the enthusiasm in the fans, at least for this fan, and I can really see how fans of the smaller poorer schools lose enthusiasm as well. As soon as you have some good players, they just leave. That would suck. So, to circle back on your question, I don’t know if that particular OU photo means anything, but I do think the average fan is losing interest.• Jeff E. emails: I don’t go into a grocery store that often. Maybe once every three months. FYI – I wouldn’t have groceries delivered. It’s one of those analog human experiences I sort of enjoy. New products. Seeing someone I know. Hennepin County Bars DOJ Election Monitors from Inside Minneapolis Polling Places, Forces Them to Stay 100 Feet Outside on Election Day
Hennepin County has denied the Department of Justice’s request to place election monitors inside Minneapolis-area polling places for Tuesday’s midterm election.
The county will be forcing federal staff to remain outside the state’s 100-foot boundary, in plain clothes, and limit them to voluntary interviews with voters after they leave.
The decision, confirmed by the office of Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty, is the same rule they applied during the August primary.
The DOJ is currently deploying monitors nationwide, including teams focused on Minneapolis, Brooklyn Park, and Brooklyn Center.
According to statements from Moriarty’s office, the county consulted the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office and others before rejecting the request for interior access.
DOJ monitors “will not be permitted inside polling places but instead will remain outside a 100-foot boundary from the polling locations, in compliance with Minnesota law.”
The monitors are expected to be DOJ staff in plainclothes and may attempt to interview voters as they exit, but participation is entirely voluntary.
Moriarty said her office is “committed to ensuring free, safe, and fair elections” and will review reports of potentially unlawful behavior directed at voters or election workers.
“Our office is fully prepared to protect and defend your right to vote,” Moriarty said in a press release about the request. “Any reports of threats, harassment, or intimidation directed at voters or election workers will be reviewed and, if appropriate, prosecuted.”
Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon said both Hennepin and Ramsey counties declined the DOJ’s request, as they are permitted to do under state law, and that his office, along with the Attorney General’s Office, will have observers watch the federal monitors, according to a CBS Minnesota report.
The restriction rests on Minnesota Statute § 204C.06, which limits who may enter a polling place or stand within 100 feet of the building.
Federal monitors lack automatic authority to go inside without local consent. This leaves the DOJ unable to directly observe the interior of polling places in the largest county in a state at the center of recent national attention over ballot handling, noncitizen voting concerns, and the influence of concentrated immigrant communities, including the large Somali population in Minneapolis represented by Rep. Ilhan Omar.
The DOJ plans to have monitors working in every state.

Major burger chain’s franchisee files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
Fast-food burger franchisees are rejecting underperforming leases in bankruptcy cases as part of reorganizations, which they hope will shed unprofitable restaurants.
Among the burger chains that are restructuring debt and closing restaurants are Wendy’s and Checkers and Rally’s.

Checkers and Rally’s franchisee bankrupt
Checkers and Rally’s fast-food burger chain franchisee Global Midsouth Holding Corp. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to reorganize its business, facing a foreclosure notice on its Jackson, Tenn., restaurant property.
The Memphis-based debtor filed its petition in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Tennessee on Oct. 28, 2026, a day before a foreclosure auction was scheduled at the Madison County Courthouse in Jackson, Tenn.
The bankruptcy filing imposed an automatic stay on all legal actions against the debtor while the case proceeds.
Global Midsouth listed $1.9 million in assets and $1.3 million in liabilities in its petition. It only listed two unsecured creditors on its petition, $3,400 owed to the State of Tennessee Department of Revenue and $2,500 owed to Madison County Waste Disposal.
Revenue declines over 2 years
The debtor’s revenue has also declined over the last two years from $860,000 in total revenue in 2024 to $800,000 in revenue in 2025. The company reported only $582,000 in revenue in 2026 for the year through the filing date.
Global Midsouth’s owner Sedrick Turner, who has been a Checkers and Rally’s franchisee for about 30 years, grew his restaurant portfolio to 16 locations in Alabama, Missouri, Mississippi, and Tennessee by July 2025, according to a statement.
“With every restaurant we operate, we aim to elevate the guest experience, strengthen our team, and serve the surrounding community,” Turner said in the statement. “I’ve spent over three decades building and leading franchise operations, and I believe success comes from staying hands on, empowering your people, and delivering consistent quality,” Turner said.
“Sedrick is the kind of franchisee every brand hopes to attract — experienced, driven, and deeply committed to both people and performance,” said Robert Bhagwandat, Checkers Drive-In Restaurants senior director of franchise development.
“He understands what it takes to run great restaurants and grow with purpose,” Bhagwandat said.
Checkers and Rally’s operate on a franchise model with potential operators developing locations on less than half of an acre, which is half the size of competing drive-thru restaurants.
Chain targets 8 markets
The restaurant chain is targeting select markets throughout the U.S. for franchises, including South and Central Wisconsin, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Southern California, Las Vegas, Florida, and South Carolina.
Checkers Drive-In Restaurants, which was established in 1986 as a drive-thru chain, operates over 700 locations across the East, Midwest, Southeast, and Western states.
Another franchisee files bankruptcy
Global Midsouth is not the only Checkers to suffer from financial issues, as Checkers Drive-In franchisee C.S. Holdings of Tampa LLC, which operates two locations in Tampa, Fla., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on July 14 to reorganize its business.
The Checkers locations are independently owned and operated, and Checkers Drive-In Restaurants Inc. licenses its brand to franchisees.
Franchisor Checkers Drive-In Restaurants did not file for bankruptcy. Checkers and Rally’s were not immediately available for comment.
Global Midsouth’s bankruptcy filing comes on the heels of a petition filed by a Wendy’s franchisee Meritage Hospitality Group, which filed for Chapter 11 protection in September 2026.
Meritage, which operated over 350 Wendy’s franchises in 15 states, filed for bankruptcy protection to reorganize its business, reject leases of underperforming locations and close those restaurants.

Below, I’ll break down what each plan offers, including pricing, features and download speeds.
Not sure whether 10GB is enough? Skip ahead to learn how to check your monthly data usage.
Tello Mobile: $15/Line
At $15/month, Tello Mobile offers the cheapest 10GB phone plan overall. Taxes and fees are extra, but it’s still likely to be the least expensive option overall.
The $15/line price isn’t dependent on a multi-line discount, so the same plan and price are available for any number of lines. Your monthly per-line price won’t change if you add or drop someone from your plan.
Here’s what each line will get with Tello Mobile’s 10GB plan:
Unlimited nationwide talk and text
10GB high-speed data
Mobile hotspot included
International calling to 60+ countries
Wi-Fi calling
Free roaming in Europe (through January 31; details)
Download Speeds (10GB/month)
5G: 70-357 Mbps
4G: 13-61 Mbps

H2O Wireless: $16/Line
H2O Wireless offers the cheapest annual 10GB plan at $16/line per month. For two lines, that’s $32/month ($384 upfront for a year). Taxes and fees are extra.
By paying for a full year upfront, you can get a lower monthly rate than H2O Wireless’ regular monthly plan. However, if you don’t want to prepay for a full year, you can still get the same plan monthly for $20/line.
Here’s what each line will get with H2O Wireless’ 10GB plan:
Unlimited nationwide talk and text
10GB high-speed data
2GB mobile hotspot
International calling to 100+ countries
International texting to any country
$1.50 international talk credit
$5 international roaming credit
Download Speeds (10GB/month):

US Mobile: $21.50/Line
For two lines, US Mobile offers a 20GB shareable data plan for $43/month. That works out to be $21.50/line, with taxes and fees included.
With this plan, each line could use 10GB of high-speed data per month. Since the data is shared across lines, you have a bit more flexibility if one person uses more cellular data than the other.
Here’s what each line will get with US Mobile’s shareable data plan:

How To Find Out if 10GB Is Enough High-Speed Data
Wondering whether 10GB of high-speed data is enough for each line? Start by checking how much cellular data you both actually use.
Review your cell phone bills from the past three to six months. Most providers show monthly data usage for each line on your account.
You can also log in to your provider’s website or app if you don’t have copies of your bills.
Need help finding your usage? Here are step-by-step instructions for checking your data with the Big Three:
AT&T
T-Mobile
Verizon
If both people on your account use less than 10GB of high-speed data per month, you may be able to save money by switching to one of these plans.
Checking your usage before switching can help you find the cheapest plan that meets both people’s needs.
Final Thoughts
If you’re paying for unlimited data you rarely use, switching to a limited-data plan could save you hundreds of dollars a year on two lines.
The best plan depends on how much data you both use and how you prefer to pay.
For the cheapest monthly plan, choose Tello Mobile. At $15/line, you’ll pay $30/month plus taxes. Each line gets its own 10GB of high-speed data.
