“Laboratories Of Democracy”: Five State Ballot Measures To Watch Today

Authored by Jon Miltimore via The Daily Economy,On Tuesday night, millions of Americans will track election results to see which party controls Congress after the ballots are counted. Far less attention will be paid to state elections, including ballot initiatives that could have far-reaching economic consequences. Here are five outcomes to watch.1. California Proposition 40: The ‘One-Time’ Billionaire Wealth TaxUnlike other items on this list, most readers have likely already heard about California’s proposed tax on billionaires, which would impose a “one-time” 5 percent tax on “certain covered assets” above $1 billion. (Don’t ask how this wealth will be determined.)Even though the proposed tax has yet to pass, let alone be implemented, it has already generated considerable media coverage, in no small part because it has been credited with driving several billionaires from the Golden State, including movie director Steven Spielberg and Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. There are plenty of problems with this proposal, especially if one cares about property rights. But perhaps its biggest problem is one of utility: factoring in the likelihood of capital flight, it’s actually projected by economists to generate negative revenue for the state. That may be one reason Prop 40 is expected to lose, according to prediction markets.Prop 40 only requires a simple majority to pass, but there’s a catch. Even if the initiative does exceed the 50 percent threshold, it could be blocked if competing Propositions 41 or 42 receive more “yes” votes.2. Florida Amendment 3: Expanding the Homestead ExemptionIn Florida, voters will weigh Amendment 3, potentially amending the Florida Constitution to supercharge the property-tax exemption for qualified homeowners and other property owners. The first $50,000 of homestead value is exempt from non-school-district property taxes now; this measure would increase that floor to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028, with inflation adjustments thereafter. (The amendment would also place new restrictions on how local governments use property-tax revenue.)There’s a lot to hate about property taxes, which invert the moral order of ownership. But tax cuts also come with trade-offs. The most widely discussed tradeoff in this case is the estimated $45 billion in lost revenue for local governments over five years. That may not be the only trade-off, however.”Abolishing, or drastically capping, property taxes would centralize government at the state level, making local governments less responsive to residents, especially homeowners,” AIER economist Jason Sorens wrote in a property-tax explainer last year. While Amendment 3 might be music to the ears of anti-tax advocates, it’s currently facing an uphill battle. Unlike California’s Prop 40, Amendment 3 requires 60 percent voter approval to pass.3. North Dakota Constitutional Measure 2: School Lunch Funding for AllIn North Dakota, voters will have the opportunity to vote for free lunches – literally.Constitutional Measure 2 would require public schools to offer “free” breakfast and lunch to every student enrolled in a K-12 school, regardless of family income. (Under current means testing, one in three students receives free or reduced-price meals.) The state would require schools to provide the meals, then reimburse them for costs not covered by other government funding.Students of economics, of course, will point out the obvious: there is no such thing as a free lunch. Somebody always pays. In this case, the costs are simply shifted from school kids’ families to their community’s taxpayers: an estimated $124 million to $134 million in new and ongoing biennial expenditures. That is unlikely to be the policy’s only trade-off, however. For example, economic research has found significantly higher amounts of food waste in schools offering universal “free” meal programs than in other schools. These programs have also been linked to rising childhood obesity in some research, though a move toward healthier school meals may have halted that trend.Constitutional Measure 2 would pass with a bare majority under North Dakota’s current rules for constitutional amendments. Another measure on the ballot, however, would raise that threshold to 60 percent, and it’s unclear whether this would apply to Constitutional Measure 2.4. Wisconsin Question 3: Restrictions on Government PreferencesShould government entities be allowed to discriminate on the basis of race, sex, or national origin? That’s the question Wisconsin voters will decide on Tuesday. Question 3 essentially puts DEI on the ballot:”A ‘yes’ vote supports this amendment to prohibit any governmental entity from discriminating or granting preferential treatment based on race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in public employment, public education, public contracting, or public administration.”The stakes for Question 3 may go beyond the borders of Wisconsin.DEI has been in full-blown retreat in corporate America for two years. Wisconsin’s vote may help determine whether that retreat continues or whether there are attempts to revive policies that discriminate against some to actively benefit preferred groups, despite recent setbacks at the Supreme Court. While the measure isn’t explicitly economic, its consequences will ripple through public contracting, hiring procedures, and compliance costs.5. Arizona Proposition 316: Local Taxes on GroceriesUnlike the other measures on this list, Prop 316 isn’t a constitutional amendment. It’s a “legislatively referred state statute” that would cap local grocery taxes at 2 percent and require voter approval for any increase. (Local governments that already have tax rates that exceed 2 percent would be allowed to maintain them, but could not further increase them.)The great economist Adam Smith once observed, “The tax which each individual is bound to pay ought to be certain, and not arbitrary.” Unfortunately, this discipline is largely forgotten today, which helps explain why the US tax burden is so heavy and falls so broadly and unevenly.Prop 316 is designed to ensure that food, one of the most vital human necessities, doesn’t become a cash cow for local governments. The measure requires a simple majority to become law and is currently forecast to pass.ConclusionOn Tuesday night, many Americans will be glued to their TVs and computers, watching election returns to see who controls the Senate and House of Representatives. But the American system was intentionally designed to divide and frustrate power, which is why the Constitution gave states, in the words of James Madison, “numerous and indefinite” powers. In many ways, these “laboratories of democracy” are still working today, and voters across the country will determine whether their local governments innovate and thrive or calcify under heavy-handed policies.

MSNBC host links Election Day to wiping out Pat McAfee and the ‘manosphere’

November 3, 2026 MMN Editor Filed Under: THE NEWS

For Joe Scarborough at MSNBC, or MSNOW as they want you to call it these days, voters across America could be going to the polls today with a clear mission: to bury Pat McAfee and the “manosphere.”In a bizarre Election Day morning rant, the “Morning Joe” host claimed that McAfee was “ruining GameDay” and that he’s “had enough.” That led Scarborough to declare that the election could become a referendum on McAfee and high-testosterone men.”While we’re talking football, does anybody want to get in trouble? I’ll just say it myself. I’ve just had enough of this. Pat McAfee ruining ‘College GameDay.’ I look forward to waking up on Saturday mornings and watching that. And I don’t know if they haven’t got the message yet, but the manosphere that we all thought was brought in in ’24, it may get washed aside. And maybe you aren’t having to be, you know, yelling at people and being freaked out because two kids in Utah put up signs or say something that might offend you.”FBI ADVISED ESPN STAR PAT MCAFEE TO WEAR A BULLETPROOF VEST AFTER CHARLIE KIRK’S ASSASSINATIONThe last sentence is a reference to McAfee saying he felt unsafe during a recent ESPN stop at the University of Utah.”Do you know what Nick Saban calls that? Tuesday! It’s like, and he’s melting down,” Scarborough continued.THE CRAIG CARTON SHOW–UNFILTERED, UNAPOLOGETIC AND UNMISSABLE. DOWNLOAD HIS DAILY PODCAST NOW!This would be the same Joe Scarborough who declared in March 2024 that Joe Biden was at his “best Biden ever” level despite what the rest of us saw with our own eyes. “Morning Joe,” at the time, said that Biden was totally all there. “He was as sharp as anybody else I’ve spoken to and spoke actually like a man who’s been doing this since he was 29 years old and new world leaders,” Scarborough said of Biden. How’d that work out?Now the MSNBC blowhard wants us to believe that American voters are declaring McAfee as public enemy No. 1, and they’re voting for woke candidates as a “gotcha” to the GameDay host. That’s quite a feather in Pat’s cap.Gallup reported last week that the top concerns for voters this cycle are the economy, healthcare, war, income, gas prices, immigration, abortion, the Middle East/Palestine, crime, data centers and climate change.Nowhere in the latest Gallup poll do we see “Pat McAfee” or the “manosphere” as a hot issue. To our knowledge, not a single political candidate used Pat McAfee in an attack ad.

“HOPEFULLY” Ballots Get to Board of Elections — NY Voting Machines REJECT Ballots Across Westchester County — How Did They Pass Pre-Election Testing?!

November 3, 2026 MMN Editor Filed Under: THE NEWS

The elections supervisor for the town of Eastchester, New York, Anthony Colavita, has issued a statement following local and countywide issues with voting machines for the midterm election.
The Gateway Pundit reported earlier that Westchester County, NY, is having countywide issues with its voting machines and is attributing the errors to the paper the ballots are printed on.
In its official statement, Westchester County stated:
The Westchester County Board of Elections (BOE) is aware of an issue involving paper ballots that is preventing voting machines from accepting ballots at polling locations throughout the County.  The Westchester Board of Elections wants to reassure every voter that your vote matters, your ballot will be secure and your vote will be counted.
The Board of Elections is in constant communication with New York State officials, Westchester County Government and poll workers to address this issue and ensure that voting continues with as little disruption as possible. In the meantime, voters should continue to complete their paper ballots as instructed by poll workers. Ballots will be placed in designated orange emergency ballot bags, which will remain secure and monitored. These ballots will subsequently be counted in accordance with applicable election procedures.
While the Westchester County explanation is rather vague, the elections supervisor for the Town of Eastchester gave more information.  In a statement posted to social media, Colavita stated:
“Apparently, the paper that the Board of Elections chose to use is not compatible with the machines that the paper ballots are fed into.  I don’t know how this happened, or how it wasn’t checked ahead of time.  But not withstanding that, we are asking all Eastchester, Tuckahoe, and Bronxville voters to still go to the polls, not withstanding.
Remember, when you get to the polling location, please sign in, so we have checks and balances on the number of people that are voting.  Cast your vote on paper and be sure that your vote is placed securely into the orange bags, which hopefully will make their way to the Board of Elections.
It is important that, even though we have a computer glitch, that this work out and that everyone come out to vote.  Will there be a line?  Probably not, because its moving along pretty quickly.”
This is eerily similar to the “Drawer #3” and the 19-inch ballot issue in Maricopa County in the November 2022 midterm election in which Katie Hobbs “defeated” Kari Lake in the governor’s race.
And telling voters that “hopefully” their ballots make their way to the Board of Elections is a brutally honest choice of words.
But more concerning is exactly what Colavita points out:  How was this not checked ahead of time?
Election officials are tasked with running pre-election checks called “logic and accuracy” testing (L&A testing).  Westchester County is no exception to this procedure.
In fact, Westchester County was scheduled to begin its L&A testing on October 7, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., according to a public notice.
According to the notice:
“The inspection and pre-election testing will take place October 7, 2026 at 10:00 A.M. and will take place at 450 Saw Mill River Road, Ardsley, NY 10502, where the county test decks will be run and machines may be viewed.  Pre-election testing will continue daily, 10:00 A.M., until all pre-election testing has been completed.

Can someone explain to me how these machines passed Logic and Accuracy testing if the ballots were printed on the wrong paper?
Or, does this just confirm what we’ve said all along: logic and accuracy testing is simply a fake process designed to give voters a false sense of security.
— CannCon (@canncon) November 3, 2026

Several questions remain to be answered:  How did these voting machines pass L&A testing if the ballots are printed on the wrong paper that cannot be accepted by the Liberty Vote (formerly Dominion Voting) tabulators?  And how does the county’s printer, Phoenix Graphics, a Rochester-based company that purports to be “New York’s largest supplier of ballot materials” that serves 46 counties not know which paper can properly be read by the Liberty Vote tabulators?

UNREAL: Hennepin County Poll Worker Spotted Wearing Bloody ‘Problem Solved’ Shirt, Evoking Images of Charlie Kirk’s Assassination

A poll worker in Rogers, Minnesota, was photographed wearing a white T-shirt reading “Problem Solved” with red blood splatters near the collar and down the chest, according to a photo obtained by Alpha News senior reporter Liz Collin.
The image, taken Saturday at the Rogers fire station community room in Hennepin County, shows a woman seated at a table with a laptop, scanner, papers, and other election equipment, wearing the shirt under a lanyard.

Speculation is that it celebrates the assassination of Charlie Kirk or other assassinations; the Halloween design has been controversial for years.

An American flag is visible in the background.
The shirts have gone viral in the past after being worn by teachers and speculated to have been a nod to Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
Hennepin County told Alpha News it forwarded the concern to the city clerk in Rogers for review.
In its statement, the county cited Minnesota Statutes 211B.11, which prohibits wearing, displaying, or distributing items in a polling place that show the name, likeness, logo, or slogan of a candidate on the ballot; the number, title, subject, slogan, or logo of a ballot question; or the name, logo, or slogan of a political party represented by a candidate on the ballot.
The county noted that most workers at polling places in Hennepin County are election judges hired by the municipality.
The statement continued: “Hennepin County expects polling places to be welcoming and free from intimidation, harassment, or disruption for voters and election workers alike… Anyone with concerns about conduct at a polling place should bring them to the attention of the head election judge or city clerk’s office.”
The image comes on the same day The Gateway Pundit detailed Hennepin County’s decision to bar Department of Justice election monitors from inside Minneapolis-area polling places for today’s midterm election.
Hennepin County Bars DOJ Election Monitors from Inside Minneapolis Polling Places, Forces Them to Stay 100 Feet Outside on Election Day

The county requires federal staff to remain outside the state’s 100-foot boundary, in plain clothes, and limits them to voluntary interviews with voters after they leave.
The restriction, confirmed by Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty’s office, rests on Minnesota Statute § 204C.06 and leaves the DOJ unable to directly observe the interior of polling places in the state’s largest county.
Hennepin County has faced repeated scrutiny over election administration, ballot handling, and related issues, including national attention tied to concerns over noncitizen voting and concentrated immigrant communities in Minneapolis.
Minnesota law generally bars campaign materials, including certain apparel, inside polling places or within 100 feet of the building to maintain a neutral environment free of intimidation or influence.
Election judges and official challengers are themselves prohibited from displaying campaign material.
The Rogers photo has prompted calls online for the individual to be removed or disciplined, with critics arguing the shirt creates an atmosphere inconsistent with neutral election administration.
The city clerk in Rogers is now reviewing the matter.
Local officials have not released a further public statement on the specific shirt or any personnel action as of early Tuesday afternoon.
The incident adds to ongoing questions about the appearance and conduct of election workers in Hennepin County on Election Day.

An entire island just lost its KFC and Taco Bell overnight

November 3, 2026 MMN Editor Filed Under: SUCCESS, The Street

While the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico has had KFC since 1967 and Taco Bell since 1985, the island in the Caribbean abruptly lost both Yum! Brands chains after the fast-food parent company ended its relationship with Encanto Restaurants, the Associated Press reported.

The latter franchise operator has operated KFC restaurants on the island since 1985, but according to a Yum! Brands statement cited by AP, could no longer “meet company standards.”

As a result, more than 100 KFC and Taco Bell locations in Puerto Rico have been temporarily closed as of Nov. 2, although both Yum! Brands and Encanto Restaurants framed the disruption as temporary.

Why all KFC and Taco Bell restaurants in Puerto Rico are closed

“We remain deeply committed to Puerto Rico and are working as quickly as possible to welcome customers back to our restaurants,” the parent company said in the statement.

KFC Puerto Rico, meanwhile, said in an Instagram post that it “hope[s] to be able to serve you again very soon.” Taco Bell also issued a similar statement. As of the last U.S. Census, Puerto Rico is home to just over 3.22 million residents, of whom 340,000 live in the capital of San Juan.

Along with the Taco Bell and KFC locations, Encanto Restaurants also operates Pizza Hut and IHOP restaurants on the island for a total of 180 restaurants employing more than 3,000 workers. The latter two chains are not affected by the shutdown and have remained open as of Nov. 3.

Beyond the statements on the closures, none of the parties provided more details on the reasons for the fallout or how the legal process around extracting longstanding franchise partners will play out.

A target date for reopening or potential candidates for new franchise operators have also not been identified.

Yum! Brands releases third-quarter earnings, KFC leads the pack on profit

In third-quarter earnings that Yum! Brands released on Nov. 3, the fast-food company reported a 4% revenue bump to $2.05 billion. KFC led profits with 6% sales growth and 1% same-store sales growth.

At a global scale, KFC sales in the Middle East, India, and the rest of Asia saw the highest growth at 25%, 20%, and 12%, respectively.

Taco Bell, meanwhile, experienced a rapid turnaround in which same-store sales in the total quarter were down 4% but jumped up to 3% over the last four weeks. This came as the chain recovered from a cyclospora outbreak in shredded iceberg lettuce over the summer months.

Although foot traffic to Taco Bell dropped dramatically throughout July, it bounced back almost instantaneously once the outbreak was declared over several weeks later.

“I’m incredibly proud of how the Taco Bell team and our franchise partners have come together with urgency and focus to drive a rapid recovery,” Yum! Brands CEO Chris Turner told investors on the call.

“From a low point in July, Taco Bell U.S. same-store sales strengthened week after week, and since the end of September, the brand has been outperforming the QSR industry on same-store sales growth.”
